Yesterday, the U.S. Naval War College (USNWC) celebrated 50 graduates from the College of Naval Warfare (CNW) and the College of Naval Command and Staff (CNCS). The USNWC President selects an Honor Graduate from each class, recognizing leaders who have excelled in academics, campus engagement, community involvement, and the advancement of military and government service. This class’s Honor Graduates were Commander Brian LeGare, USN (CNW), and Major Austin Schwartz, USA (CNCS). To recognize their outstanding achievements, Naval War College Foundation (NWCF) CFO Ben Hogan presented them with engraved Weems and Plath compasses, symbolizing their continued leadership and direction. Today, the U.S. Naval War College (USNWC) and the Naval War College Museum commemorated the 80th anniversary of the Battle of Iwo Jima with the rededication of the Marine Corps War Memorial Model and the opening of the Private First Class Placido Femino, USMC Exhibit. These tributes honor the bravery and sacrifice of those who fought in one of the most pivotal battles of World War II. The family of PFC Femino graciously donated a collection of items he brought back from the Battle of Iwo Jima to the Naval War College Museum. Now on display, these artifacts offer a personal glimpse into history and the experiences of those who served. Keynote speaker Lieutenant General Calvert L. Worth, Jr., USMC, Commanding General, II Marine Expeditionary Force, reflected on the enduring legacy of the Battle of Iwo Jima, reaffirming that the US Navy and United States Marine Corps are as ready as they’ve ever been to serve our great nation. The Naval War College Foundation (NWCF) is proud to have supported the conservation of the Iwo Jima sculpture. The effort was partially funded by a Federal Save America’s Treasures grant administered by the Institute of Museum and Library Services. #NavalWarCollegeFoundation #NWCF #USNavalWarCollege #USNWC #IwoJima #EducateTodaySecureTomorrow

Conservation efforts on the Iwo Jima plaster sculpture in the lobby of Spruance Hall at the U.S. Naval War College are nearing completion! Most of the restoration has focused on carefully cleaning the sculpture, with conservator Rika Smith also addressing structural cracks and restoring damaged pieces. When asked about the most surprising aspect of the project, Smith noted that unexpected wax was added to the sculpture, which added some complexity. Still, it hasn’t slowed progress, and the restoration is moving forward smoothly. Conservation of the Iwo Jima plaster sculpture is being supported in part by a Federal Save America’s Treasures grant administered by the Institute of Museum and Library Services. #NavalWarCollegeFoundation #NWCF #USNWC #Conservation #IwoJimaSculpture #EducateTodaySecureTomorrow

The Naval War College Foundation is always proud to support U.S. Naval War College (USNWC) alumni and future military leaders. CDR Anthony LaVopa, USN, a USNWC alum, recently shared his experience in the Halsey Alfa program—an Advanced Research Program (ARP) focused on the character of near-future operational-tactical warfighting at the high end of the conflict spectrum. LaVopa discusses how war gaming enhances the tactical acumen needed for high-end conflict and the mindset it cultivates in military officers. He emphasizes that officers must be more than just managers—they must be leaders, and honing these skills in a military environment requires consistent practice.
