Meet Aaron Mak, a mechanical engineer in #NUWCDivisionNewport’s Undersea Warfare Platforms and Payload Integration Department, who is featured as this November’s new professional. Aaron is from New Bedford, Massachusetts, and was hired at Division Newport in September 2022. He received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in mechanical engineering from the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth in May 2022. Aaron plans to earn a doctorate degree in mechanical engineering. In his role as a mechanical engineer, Aaron provides launch analysis for a variety of devices used by the fleet. What he likes most about working at Division Newport is the opportunities and his teammates. “If you have an idea for a project, there are avenues to apply for funding,” he said. “Or, if you have a new interest, you can move around. If you want to continue your education, like I do, there are several programs that offer technical courses or university courses. “What I love most about my job is my co-workers. We learn from each other every day. It’s fun bouncing ideas between each other and seeing how they would approach the same problem.” For those who may want to follow in his career footsteps, Aaron has some advice: “Don’t be afraid to ask a lot of questions. There’s a lot of information and no one expects you to know or understand everything right away. Take the time to understand what’s presented and lean on more experienced people to help you.” To learn more about job opportunities at Division Newport, visit https://lnkd.in/eJxAQ3U #WhatWeDoMatters

The award program recognizes individuals and teams in various occupational specialties across the enterprise for outstanding efforts made in support of the NAVSEA mission. The team was recognized for their outstanding efforts in demonstrating that Mark 48 Mod 4 analog torpedo can still be successfully deployed from U.S. submarines, resulting in the first time that type of torpedo was fired from a U.S. submarine in more than 20 years. Division Newport team members include David R. Reynolds, Peter F. Bria Jr., Kyle M. Edwards, Patrick M. Foster, Michael A. Gower, Christopher S. Guinen, Jeffrey R. Noia, William J. Roman, Dylan J. Traveling across the globe is nothing new for #NUWCDivisionNewport In-Service Engineering Agents (ISEA) Matthew George, Daniel Braman and Dillon Savitzky, but the trio recently experienced a historic first Down Under. Members of the Handling Systems Engineering Branch in the Sensors and Sonar Systems Department, the agents participated the first three-week Submarine Tendered Maintenance Period (STMP) at HMAS Stirling in Perth, Australia, marking a significant step in the Australia, United Kingdom, United States (#AUKUS) trilateral partnership. STMPs are similar to planned maintenance periods that are typically conducted in U.S. submarine ports. They usually last up to three weeks and don't require the submarine to be dry-docked. “This is the first time since World War II that the U.S. has conducted submarine maintenance in Australian waters, and certainly the first instance in history of a joint American-Australian team performing maintenance on a nuclear-powered attack submarine,” Rear Adm. Lincoln Reifsteck, U.S. Navy AUKUS Integration and Acquisition program manager, said in early September after the STMP was complete. “The importance of this event cannot be overstated. These last few weeks provided essential maintenance and stewardship experience for our Australian partners in advance of establishing a sovereign SSN force in Australia.” Read about the ISEAs' role in a story posted at: https://lnkd.in/gd7Txbq6 #WhatWeDoMatters #underseasuperiority Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA)

More than 200 industry partners gathered for an Industry Day with the Undersea Technology Innovation Consortium (UTIC) to learn about the newest collaboration from #NUWCDivisionNewport and the Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA). The event was held at the Wyndham Newport Hotel in Middletown, Rhode Island, on Oct. 15. “These events not only provide our industry partners with specific requests from NAVSEA and warfare center engineers, but they also provide a high-level perspective on what’s going on in the Navy,” said Tom Carroll, program manager in Division Newport’s Strategic Planning Office and liaison with UTIC. “Industry days are crucial in the relationship between the Navy and UTIC because they align us for successful collaboration.” Rear Adm. Michael Van Poots, commander of the Undersea Warfighting Development Center (UWDC) in Groton, Connecticut, presented some of the Navy’s current areas of interest including robotics; unmanned undersea vehicles and hybrid systems; artificial intelligence; large language models; and cross-domain command, control, and communications.
