The Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division originally established itself as the major testing area for naval guns and ammunition. Today, it continues to provide the military with the development and integration of warfare systems for the warfighter, warfighting and the future fleet. Our MISSION: We deliver warfare systems to protect our nation and defeat our adversaries. Our VISION: Design, develop, and integrate technologically superior, 21st century warfare systems. The division is headquartered at Dahlgren, VA, and provides Fleet support at the NSWC Dahlgren Division Dam Neck Activity, in Virginia Beach, VA, overlooking the Virginia Capes Fleet Operations Area. NSWCDD conducts advance research in all systems-related areas and pursues scientific disciplines including physics, mathematics, directed energy and digital engineering, modeling and simulation, software, mechanical, electrical and systems engineering, to name a few. As a premier naval scientific and engineering institution, we are The Leaders in Warfare Systems Development and Integration.

  • NSWCDD hosted a three-day Naval Surface Technology and Innovation Consortium (NSTIC) collaboration event, presenting strategies and program specifics to academia, defense and industry representatives. The event showcased NSWCDD's commitment to innovation and collaboration for faster and better defense solutions. Day 1: Featured guided tours of NSWCDD facilities. Day 2: Provided NSWCDD’s overview and technical approach. Day 3: Included one-on-one technical meetings. Technical Director Dale Sisson Jr., P.E., SES, emphasized the importance of partnerships in the ongoing evolution of NSWCDD. Commanding Officer Capt. Joe Oravec highlighted the need for innovative collaborations to accelerate fleet deployment. NSTIC Other Transaction Authority (OTA) program lead Cindy Montrief discussed how the OTA helps expand the reach of technology transition initiatives with a noted increase in project awards over the past four years. NSWCDD subject matter experts provided briefs about their technology challenges and the solutions they seek in areas such as launcher and projectile systems, directed-energy science and artificial intelligence/machine learning.   • Celebrating National Hispanic Heritage Month, NSWCDD hosted a warfare centers-wide event highlighting the Hispanic community's influential role in driving change through resilience and innovation. NSWCDD’s Commanding Officer Capt. Joe Oravec kicked off the event by sharing the impactful story of 1st Lt. Baldomero López, who gallantly gave his life for his country while forging ahead against enemy forces. "There is an old expression: You can’t point the way; you have to lead the way,” said Oravec. Following Oravec’s remarks, a panel discussion with leaders from all divisions fostered a dialogue about our multifaceted, proficient team and their role in our successful mission.   • ??Challenge Accepted: Driving Precision in Metamodeling The recent Workforce Development Challenge at the NSWCDD Innovation Lab focused on promoting collaboration and networking among new recruits while teaching them to craft innovative prototype solutions. The challenge involved metamodeling—the science of creating streamlined and suitable mathematical representations of contested environments for swift and precise analysis. This process leverages knowledge from a range of Navy systems, algorithm creation, statistical analysis and metamodeling methodologies. Teamwork is essential at these events, as the engineers rely on each other’s varied expertise and experience to facilitate speedy and accurate assessments.
