The mission of NSWC Crane is to provide acquisition engineering, in-service engineering and technical support for sensors, electronics, electronic warfare and special warfare weapons. NSWC Crane also works to apply component and system-level product and industrial engineering to surface sensors, strategic systems, special warfare devices and electronic warfare systems, as well as to execute other responsibilities as assigned by the Commander, Naval Surface Warfare Center. The focus of NSWC Crane is Harnessing the Power of Technology for the Warfighter. It specializes in total lifecycle support in three focus areas: Expeditionary Warfare Strategic Missions Electronic Warfare Located on the third largest naval installation in the world, NSWC Crane’s total focus is to support the Warfighter by leveraging its technical capabilities for the rapidly changing combat environment. Anchored by technical expertise, a strong work ethic and total lifecycle leadership, NSWC Crane’s personnel and preeminent facilities set the standard for excellence in acquisition, engineering and sustainment. NSWC Crane provides comprehensive support for complex military systems spanning design, development, deployment and sustainment in three focus areas: Electronic Warfare, Strategic Missions and Expeditionary Warfare. NSWC Crane's skilled professionals put technical solutions directly into the hands of the Warfighter, ensuring safer missions. Our broad customer base includes the Navy, Marine Corps, Army, Air Force, United States Special Operations Command, Coast Guard, NASA, and many other military, civilian, and foreign military organizations. NSWC Crane is one of Indiana’s largest high-tech employers with over 2,000 scientists, engineers and technicians. NSWC Crane’s reach is global, and at any given time, hundreds of its more than 3,300 employees are supporting the Warfighter around the world.

Recently, the SCalable Asymmetric Lifecycle Engagement (SCALE) program facilitated the 2024 Trusted AI (TAI) End of the Year Showcase at WestGate Academy. More than 50 professors and students from The University Notre Dame, Indiana University, and IUPUI participated in this event, which highlighted student research posters in this technical vertical of microelectronics. The event also had a tour of NSWC Crane and corresponding areas of research in Trusted AI, as well as a visit to Constitution Grove. Earlier this month, Team Crane came together for TEAM Crane Day: Meet the Mission. Developed in 2017, NEXTGEN is part of the Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) Leadership Continuum and is designed for NAVSEA employees wanting to take on more leadership opportunities within NAVSEA. Six employees from NSWC Crane participated in the program where they were able to shadow NSWC Crane leaders, receive online leadership training, network across NAVSEA, and complete a capstone project. NSWC Crane hosted more than 470 people at the annual Naval Innovative Science and Engineering (NISE) Technical Exchange Meeting (TEM) on September 10-12 at WestGate Academy. “As always it was great to be back at NSWC Crane and I want to thank the team for hosting such an outstanding event,” said Dr. Brett Seidle, the Principal Civilian Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Navy (ASN) for Research, Development and Acquisition (RD&A). “The NISE TEM is an important gathering of some of our best minds and allows the type of innovation and collaboration critical to resolving some of the most challenging technical problems we face as a Navy and nation.” Read more about the event provides an opportunity for collaboration across the Naval Research and Development Establishment (NR&DE) while showcasing the cutting-edge efforts from Naval Warfare Centers and the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL). ???Recently, NSWC Crane T2 Director Maria Duran was invited to share success stories in a panel for the Rally - Innovation Conference at the Indiana Convention Center. This panel included representatives from multiple federal labs to convey how companies, ranging from entrepreneurs to startups to large corporations, can leverage federal research and intellectual property to build and further develop their business.
