Disease progression is not uniform for every Alzheimer's patient and tau proteoforms may hold the key to understanding why. In 2020, Simon Dujardin and colleagues including Fiona Elwood PhD, Judith Steen, Matthew Kennedy, and Bradley T. Hyman found that Alzheimer's patients have different mixes of tau proteoforms and these mixtures associate with different rates of tau aggregation and cognitive decline. These results suggest a patient’s tau proteoform profile may influence their disease trajectory. Imagine a future where we can: ? Identify the specific tau proteoforms driving pathology in a given patient ? Develop precision therapies that selectively deplete these proteoforms ? Personalize treatment based on a patient’s unique proteoform signature To make this future a reality, we need proteomics technologies that can precisely characterize individual tau proteoforms at scale. That’s why Nautilus Biotechnology is pioneering single-molecule proteomics—to help researchers and drug developers uncover the specific proteoforms driving Alzheimer’s disease. Behind every breakthrough in proteomics, there’s a team of innovators pushing boundaries. At Nautilus Biotechnology, Software Engineer Winnie Leung is doing just that—developing cutting-edge image analysis tools to enable us to decode proteins with unprecedented resolution. From capturing videos of beating heart cells in a petri dish to building robust pipelines that process images of billions of single protein molecules, Winnie’s journey in image analysis has been fueled by curiosity, creativity, and collaboration. Her work helps ensure that every image captured on the Nautilus Proteome Analysis Platform contributes to a clearer understanding of the proteome—unlocking insights that could accelerate discoveries in fields like neurodegenerative disease research. At US HUPO 2025, we showcased how high-quality proteome measurements on the Nautilus Proteome Analysis Platform are opening new doors for understanding protein function and disease. ?? Key takeaways from our time at the conference: ?? Tau proteoforms & Alzheimer’s models – Our platform measured thousands of tau proteoforms from model systems and for the first time, the human brain. We hope to enable researchers to leverage similar measurements to unravel the role of these proteoforms in neurodegenerative diseases. ?? Broadscale proteomics with confidence – Our PrISM methodology enables single-molecule protein quantification and is designed to deliver high-confidence data at an unprecedented scale. ?? Engaged & enthusiastic conversations – We were thrilled by the curiosity and deep questions from attendees exploring how Nautilus could accelerate their discoveries. ??
