Envisioning a world in which the best available science informs conservation and stewardship so that biodiversity thrives.
Recently, my colleagues Max Tarjan and Zack Wurtzebach and I had the opportunity to participate in a workshop at the Association of Fish & Wildlife Agencies (AFWA) Annual Meeting that explored an emerging collaborative initiative: the Biodiversity Information Network (BIN). In this article, I share some insights from the workshop and why I believe this initiative could significantly impact conservation efforts across the country.??

NatureServe is getting a head start on #ClimateWeek at the Future of Climate Summit! If you're in the area, go see our VP for Conservation Science Regan Smyth as she talks about how AI can help enable a better future for #biodiversity. #focsny2024
?? Join Us for a Groundbreaking Panel on Natural Capital & Biodiversity at the Future of Climate Summit VOL II! ?? We’re excited to announce the #NaturalCapital and #Biodiversity Panel at The Future of Climate Summit VOL II #focsny2024 on September 20, 2024, in New York. This panel will bring together some of the most influential voices driving biodiversity conservation and natural capital innovation. Our distinguished speakers include: Gemma Corrigan, an expert on finance for biodiversity and natural capital from Federated Hermes, who is leading the charge to integrate biodiversity into economic planning. Ted Schmitt, Senior Director at the Ai2, whose pioneering work combines #AI and #technology to enhance biodiversity #conservation. Regan Smyth from NatureServe, a leader in using data to empower conservation efforts and protect ecosystems worldwide. Nkwi Flores, an indigenous rights activist who bridges the worlds of #science and #indigenous wisdom to steward biodiversity, emphasizing the importance of local knowledge in conservation. Together, they will explore how natural capital—the ecosystems and biodiversity that sustain human well-being—can be integrated into economic and policy decisions while addressing the complex balance between economic growth, conservation, and environmental justice. From tackling the challenge of assigning economic value to ecosystems, to finding harmony between development and biodiversity, this panel will offer a vision for a future where nature-positive development thrives, and long-term sustainability takes precedence over short-term gains. ?? Key Themes: + Valuing #nature as an essential asset for humanity’s well-being + Innovations in #biodiversityfinance + How AI and data are shaping the future of conservation + Indigenous wisdom and community involvement in biodiversity protection + Climate resilience through biodiversity Join us for this pivotal conversation and be part of the movement shaping our planet’s future! ??? Join Natural Areas Association and Christopher Tracey, Director of Spatial Analysis for NatureServe, for The Map of Biodiversity Importance: Enhancing Local Conservation Strategies on Tuesday, September 24, 2024. During this webinar, Tracey will explore NatureServe's Map of Biodiversity (MoBI), a portfolio of maps identifying areas critical to sustaining our nation's rich biodiversity, and its most recent update. MoBI's resolution is now 9x more precise than the initial release, includes more than 600 species newly identified as at-risk, and reflects the latest information about protected areas in the United States. I'm very excited to share our new publication in Systematic Botany. After exhaustive survey work at the sole known location in Manchester, NH, we declare the Slender Crabgrass extinct. After genetic and morphological study, we return this grass to the rank of species, Digitaria laeviglumis, as it was first proposed by Fernald in 1920. We elevate many other varieties of Digitaria filiromis to the rank of species and describe a new species from Mexico. The grass in Mexico was confused with the extinct New Hampshire species. Why did the Slender Crabgrass go extinct? It was likely due to vast overcollection. Fernald & Griscom collected 31 herbarium sheets of material; some have more than one plant. Overcollection is not just a threat to showy orchids but can impact any rare species. This was a wonderful international collaboration led by @Bill Nichols (New Hampshire Natural Heritage Program), with @Craig Barrett, Lauren Kosslow, Cameron Corbett (West Virginia University), Joseph K. Wipff (Flora of North America author for the genus), Jorge Gabriel Sanchez-Ken (Instituto de Ecologia, Mexico), and Erin M. Sigel (University of New Hampshire). #conservation #nature #extinct #newspecies #taxonomy #endemic #rare

Excited to share a new publication on pollinator conservation! This study highlights the critical need to include more pollinating insects in State Wildlife Action Plans (SWAPs), which serve as blueprints for conserving our nation's fish and wildlife and preventing endangered species. With SWAPs being updated in 2025, the timing of this report is essential for securing funding for their protection in the next cycle. The publication is the result of collaboration across several states and features valuable insights from the #NatureServeNetwork.?
