Protecting endangered ecosystems in partnership with local communities and governments throughout Latin America.

关于我们

Nature and Culture International conserves biologically diverse landscapes in Latin America, in partnership with local people, for the planet's well-being. Since 1997, we have conserved over 26 million acres of endangered ecosystems with exceptional cost-efficiency. We prioritize community participation, collaborating with governments and local and indigenous communities to manage protected areas. Our sustainable development programs ensure better lives for local people while preserving vital ecosystems. Working in some of the most biodiverse regions, we are making a profound impact.

  • Thanks to collaborative conservation efforts, two protected areas in the Andes just grew even larger, connecting to nearby conservation sites, creating vital wildlife corridors, and strengthening climate resilience. The Río Negro Sopladora National Park nearly doubled in size, now encompassing 162,000 acres connects to the Sangay-Podocarpus Corridor, and Machángara-Tomebamba Wildlife Refuge now spans 103,000 acres, linking with El Cajas National Park to form a continuous high-altitude wildlife corridor. The Tropical Andes are the epicenter of the planet’s greatest biodiversity, home to over 34,000 species of plants and animals, with nearly half found nowhere else on Earth. This extraordinary region provides habitat for jaguars, spectacled bears, Andean eagles, and mountain tapirs, yet it faces mounting threats from climate change, extractive industries, and ecosystem fragmentation. By expanding protected areas like Río Negro Sopladora and Machángara-Tomebamba, we are strengthening ecological corridors, ensuring species survival, and preserving the lifelines that sustain local communities. • We are excited to share the establishment of a new protected area in Manabí Province, Ecuador. On December 16, 2024, the Junín Protected Area was officially designated, spanning 28,410 acres of tropical dry forests along Ecuador’s Pacific coastal range. This area not only protects vital habitats but also safeguards 10 essential water sources, ensuring clean water access for more than 26,000 people. Junín is home to remarkable biodiversity, including the vulnerable black-headed spider monkey (Ateles fusciceps) and the Esmeraldas woodstar (Chaetocercus berlepschi), a rare hummingbird found only in this region. According to Project Coordinator, José Romero, “the designation of Junín is a major accomplishment that protects natural heritage and safeguards vital water sources for the communities that depend on them.” And this milestone is just the beginning. It is the first of four planned subnational protected areas in Manabí. The success of this initiative highlights the power of collaboration. Together with Fundación Bomaco, the Provincial Government of Manabí, and the financial support of the Andes Amazon Fund we are making a meaningful impact for people and nature. The Junín Protected Area offers an inspiring model of partnership-driven success. Learn more about this project: https://lnkd.in/gNCVpYPm

  • Our team in Ecuador recently celebrated the spectacular annual blooming of the guayacanes at our Cazaderos Nature Reserve! In the tropical dry forests of southern Ecuador, the guayacanes transform the landscape into a breathtaking sea of yellow each January. After months of dry conditions, these vibrant blossoms emerge with the first rains, marking the start of the rainy season. This year, the bloom peaked during the second week of January, creating an extraordinary moment for the region—and our team was there to capture it. The Cazaderos Nature Reserve not only safeguards these iconic guayacanes but also provides critical habitat for countless species, such as the golden-mantled howler monkey and the American crocodile—a species that has existed for over 200 million years. Despite their importance, tropical dry forests face growing threats from deforestation, illegal mining, and the escalating impacts of climate change. This year’s guayacanes bloom serves as a powerful reminder of the urgent need to protect these vital ecosystems and the incredible biodiversity they support. Local communities are leading the way in conservation efforts, playing a critical role in preserving these forests for future generations. Learn more about this remarkable ecosystem and how you can support its protection. https://lnkd.in/gXkwzmFU

  • Today is Giving Tuesday — A day to act for our planet’s future! The future of our planet hinges on how we address two of the greatest challenges of our time: the rapid loss of biodiversity and the escalating impacts of climate change. These challenges are deeply interconnected, much like the ecosystems they threaten.? The Amazon, the world’s largest rainforest, stands at a critical tipping point. Without immediate action, the consequences could be irreversible, impacting wildlife, our climate, and future generations.? Today, we have an ambitious goal to raise $200,000 by tonight at midnight to support our efforts to protect 14 million acres of Amazon rainforest by 2030. Thanks to a generous triple match, every dollar you give will have three times the impact, bringing us closer to this critical milestone.? Join us in making a tangible difference for the planet’s future. https://lnkd.in/gbqKdP4n

  • At a time when many are seeking ways to create meaningful impact, you can count on Nature and Culture to address the world’s greatest ecological challenges with full force. That is why we are launching our Let’s Go Big for the Amazon campaign supporting our Amazonian Platform project. From now until December 31st, we’re working to raise $400,000 to support the Amazonian Platform and protect over 14 million acres of Amazon rainforest by 2030. This groundbreaking effort unites 11 Indigenous nationalities, 6 provincial governments, and other local partners to promote joint action and unify conservation efforts. Together, we can safeguard one of Earth’s most biodiverse landscapes, preserve habitat for hundreds of species, and support natural carbon storage. Every donation made during this campaign will be matched 2X. ?? Yesterday evening was a magnificent celebration of knowledge, legacy, hope, and a shared admiration for the natural world we work so hard to protect. Thank you to all of our speakers, performers, and attendees for making it so special. And to ADM, the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, Nature and Culture International, and Esri, whose generous support makes this event and so much other vital work possible. ? As E.O. Wilson said in Half-Earth, “It is our nature to choose large goals that, while difficult, are potentially game-changing and universal in benefit. To strive against odds on behalf of all life would be humanity at its most noble.” Stay tuned as session recordings and other highlights from the evening become available. ? Now, as we shift our focus to the remainder of COP16, we can only hope to continue this momentum. During yesterday’s program, Walter Jetz provided a sneak peak of the first annual Species Protection Index Report, which is now available here: https://lnkd.in/dHJeqaEi The report highlights key takeaways from the Species Protection Index in 2024, representing the current global state of species protection. The Species Protection Report is a collaborative effort of the E.O. Wilson Biodiversity Foundation’s Half-Earth Project, the Map of Life (MOL), the Group on Earth Observations Biodiversity Observation Network (GEO BON), and Esri.

  • On this #WorldRangerDay, meet Forest Ranger ángel Andrade from our Jambué Reserve. Rangers are responsible for daily patrols within protected areas, but their job is so much more than that! They also support ecological restoration efforts like the project to restore Amazonian forests in the Jambué Reserve. ángel supported the planting of 39,500 native trees in an area that was once only grassland. "After the restoration, we have seen various animals, such as bears, pumas, birds of all colors, and recently several peccaries and tayras." ángel said that restoration has brought significant changes to the community as well. “Today, many people from the Jambué Valley who worked in the planting say they no longer cut down trees,” explains ángel. “They realize the great effort it takes to grow a plant and how quickly everything can be lost by cutting down a tree.” Discover his story and join us in celebrating all the dedicated rangers making a difference! #NatureHeroes #Conservation #ForestRestoration https://lnkd.in/gpmpRenn
