  • In 1865, General Gordon Granger gave the following decree in Galveston, Texas. “The people of Texas are informed that in accordance with a Proclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaves are free. This involves an absolute equality of rights and rights of property between former masters and slaves, and the connection heretofore existing between them becomes that between employer and free laborer.?“ General Order #3, June 19, 1865 The announcement came at the end of a brutal civil war, two years after President Abraham Lincoln had signed the Emancipation Proclamation.?African American men, women, and children?finally knew for certain that they were free from enslavement. This vibrant quilt by self-taught artist Renee Allen celebrates the jubilation of that moment as newly free men and women cheer and embrace in excitement. June 19th, the day of the announcement, became known as Juneteenth, a celebration that would spread from Texas to other states and beyond. In 1979, Al Edwards, a Representative from Houston, introduced a bill to declare Juneteenth a Texas state holiday, campaigning for a day when "white, brown, and blacks can celebrate freedom together." When the legislature passed the bill into law in 1980, Texas became the first to mark emancipation as an official state holiday. Renee Allen's?Juneteenth?quilt was part of a nationally traveling exhibition? And Still We Rise: Race, Culture and Visual Conversations, organized by the Women of Color Quilters Network in partnership with Cincinnati Museum Center and National Underground Railroad Freedom Center. • ??To Be in Stillness Beneath the Garden?? Step into the mesmerizing realm of "Falling Garden," a visionary installation by Swiss artists Gerda Steiner and Jorg Lenzlinger, unveiled inside San Sta? church along the Grand Canal for the 50th Venice Biennale. This historic site, originally a mausoleum for a Venetian doge, now hosts a breathtaking convergence of art and nature that transcends both time and geography. To fully appreciate "Falling Garden," viewers recline amidst the church's ancient architecture, upon the gravestone-like floor, where they are enveloped by an array of suspended botanical wonders. Here, baobab seeds from Australia intermingle with beech, elder, and magnolia branches from Switzerland, silk buds from Sweden, celery roots from Canada, seaweed from South Korea, and even plastic berries from India. This global bouquet of flora transforms the sacred space into a multisensory tapestry, blurring the boundaries between continents and cultures. Steiner and Lenzlinger's creation is not just an installation but a profound exploration of interconnectedness—between nature's bounty and human creativity, and across vast geographical distances. As visitors lie in repose, they become part of a collective dream where "the garden thinks for them," inviting contemplation and immersion in a botanical fantasy that spans the globe. "Falling Garden" at San Sta? church is a testament to art's ability to transcend physical and conceptual boundaries, offering a sanctuary where viewers can lose themselves in the beauty of a world imagined and realized through the delicate interplay of art and botany. • ??Celebrating New York Pollinators Week with The Great Sunflower Project?? As we celebrate Pollinators Week, here in New York, I am reminded how crucial it is to recognize the invaluable role that pollinators play in our ecosystems. From bees to butterflies, these tiny creatures contribute significantly to our food production and the health of our environment. This week, let's delve into how we can support and protect our pollinator friends, with a special focus on the initiatives by The Great Sunflower Project. ??Identifying where Pollinators Need Help One of the most pressing tasks in pollinator conservation is identifying areas where these vital insects need our help the most. Through citizen science initiatives, individuals like you and me can contribute valuable data that helps pinpoint where pollinators are thriving and where they're struggling. ??Get Involved Today Here's how you can join in and make a difference: ??Join the Lemon Queen Sunflower Program: Plant Lemon Queen sunflowers and participate in identifying the effects of pesticides on pollinators. This program helps collect data crucial for understanding pesticide impacts on bee populations. ??Pollinator Friendly Plants and Places Program: Contribute to identifying critical plants that support pollinators and discover which regions are most conducive to their survival. Share your pollinator counts from your garden or local green spaces to contribute to this important research. ??Take the Great Pollinator Habitat Challenge: Learn how to assess and enhance habitats for pollinators in your own community. This hands-on challenge empowers you to make meaningful changes that benefit local pollinator populations. ??Join the Movement As pollinators take flight in 2024, your participation is more critical than ever. Register today here: https://lnkd.in/eWYKWvQp to start contributing your observations. Basic instructions, video guides, and downloadable data sheets are available to help you get started on your journey to becoming a citizen scientist for pollinators. ??Concerned About Pesticides? If you're concerned about neonicotinoid pesticides and their impact on pollinators, The Great Sunflower Project provides resources to help you make informed decisions. They offer a list of products containing neonicotinoids commonly found in garden shops, ensuring you can make environmentally responsible choices for your garden. ??Get Started Today To express gratitude to its members, The Great Sunflower Project is offering a special gift this year: Bee Identification Cards! These cards are designed to help you identify different bee species, empowering you to recognize and appreciate these crucial pollinators in your own gardens. Together, we can create a world where pollinators thrive and our ecosystems flourish!
