Seven recreational areas will replace the Marianna refuse pile including access to Ten Mile Creek. The portion of Ten Mile Creek accessible from the Marianna site is an undeveloped and unique natural resource that is home to fish, turtles, muskrats, beavers, waterfowl, deer and eagles. Creating trail access to this area allows residents to enjoy the varied wildlife, while preserving the natural habitat of these animals. The Shapiro Administration’s $19.6 million investment in reclaiming abandoned coal mines is more than just an environmental effort—it’s a commitment to creating local jobs and revitalizing communities across Pennsylvania. With the largest inventory of abandoned coal mines in the nation, Pennsylvania is tackling critical issues like hazardous water quality, unsafe land conditions, and ecosystem restoration. This funding will support vital projects that clean up waterways, reclaim land for future development, and reduce health and safety risks. Not only does this work enhance community safety, but it also creates opportunities for workers in the environmental restoration sector. As Pennsylvania continues to address its $5 billion need for reclamation, these projects are paving the way for a cleaner, safer future while generating meaningful job growth in both the short- and long-term. While working on the Marianna Project, Natural Streams Foundation and it's partners will construct erosion and sediment controls to minimize any impact to the nearby 10 Mile Creek. That includes the installation of ditches and berms to control runoff, construction of sumps and discharge locations and the addition of a lime supplement and mulch or hydroseed to restore a vegetative ground cover in the area. During the disposal process, 824,000 cubic yards of old coal waste will be relocated to an approved coal refuse disposal site clearing the property of any coal waste. The initial steps of the Marianna Project will eliminate this safety hazard while creating jobs in Washington County. The foundation will facilitate relocating more than 824,000 cubic yards of coal waste to a permitted coal refuse disposal site. The waste will provide natural fill material which will help avoid disturbing unused nearby land. For more information about the Marianna Project, visit our website: https://lnkd.in/gQ4s986R
