Thanks to our supporters, Wisconsin's first ever grassland climate adaptation project is wrapping up! ?? Together with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR), we're building a resilient, connected landscape that will thrive for years to come—even as the climate changes. This project supports nearly 50 Species of Greatest Conservation Need, including the endangered Ottoe skipper butterfly. What does community-powered conservation look like? 60 volunteers, 800 trees planted, and a healthier forest. 60 community members came out to help Friends of the North Pikes Creek Wetlands plant trees in the black ash-dominated wetland forest. Over a three-day weekend, volunteers planted and tubed 800 trees of four species – hackberry in the drier areas, and disease resistant American elm, bur oak, and swamp white oak in the wetter areas. They will now plant annually for 5 years. This collaborative project truly shows the power of community and its impact on conservation! This project was made possible through the generous support of the C.D. Besadny Conservation Fund, which invests in grassroots conservation and environmental education across Wisconsin. ?? The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) is expected to announce a decision by mid-December on whether listing the monarch butterfly under the Endangered Species Act (ESA) is still warranted and, if so, whether it should be listed as “threatened” or “endangered.” North America's eastern and western monarch butterfly populations have faced a variety of threats, including habitat loss, pesticide exposure, and climate change. In 2014, a petition formally requested the monarch be listed under the ESA, sparking a thorough review process. If a proposed rule to list the monarch as endangered or threatened is published this December, it will be based on decades of research and multiple years of rigorous data review. Operation Fresh Start is clearing the way for a flourishing oak savanna at Merrimac Preserve! ?? An OFS crew recently revitalized the oak savannas at Riverland Conservancy's Merrimac Preserve by clearing invasive brush, dead wood, and excess trees.? Now, native plants have the sunlight they need to thrive, creating better habitat for grassland and savanna bird species. This project was made possible through the generous support of the C.D. Besadny Conservation Fund, which invests in grassroots conservation and environmental education across Wisconsin. ??
