National Wildlife Day was founded in 2005 to help bring awareness to endangered species both near and far. To help honor the mission, here are a few locally endangered species spotted on our own properties over the years: Little brown bat ??: Adrian Melck ??: Saunders Woods Preserve Mud turtle ??: Mae Axelrod ??: Glades Wildlife Refuge Flying squirrel ??: Steve Eisenhauer ??: Harold N. Peek Preserve Black-crowned Night heron ??: Bill Moses ??: Glades Wildlife Refuge Short-eared owl ??: Ron Zigler ??: Gwynedd Preserve American bittern ??: Mike Coll ??: Hildacy Preserve Land preservation and conservation is paramount to the continued survival of so many species, including far more critters than just those on this list. We deeply thank our community for helping us to continue this work. We also cannot express enough gratitude to our amazing stewardship team who work so tirelessly to control exotic and invasive species, promote biodiversity, plant more tress, sow more seeds, and so on and so forth. Preserving open space is just the first step — taking care of that space so that nature can thrive is an ongoing journey. One that we are happy to be on. You can help support the mission by donating or becoming a member today: https://lnkd.in/d-JCWJS #NationalWildlifeDay?#endangeredspecies?#nativespecies?#stewardship

It's official: Natural Lands and Lower Merion School District reach an agreement for sale of Oakwell. The 13-acre site in Villanova, PA is directly adjacent to Natural Lands’ Stoneleigh: a natural garden. Natural Lands is the intended buyer for approximately 10 acres of the property, which would expand Stoneleigh and reunite two important landscapes. Read more:

We had a great day at beautiful Bartram's Garden yesterday at this year’s awards ceremony for the PECO Green Region grant recipients. Lots of great projects in the works — including this one in Ridley Township. Natural Lands has been a proud partner in this program for 20 years and counting.

The Barn Owl is a widespread species, but its population is declining in parts of its range, including New Jersey. The NJ Coastal Barn Owl Project began in 2021 as a collaborative effort among Conservation Science Global, Natural Lands, NJDEP Fish & Wildlife, and the Conserve Wildlife Foundation of New Jersey to provide nesting sites for Barn Owls in our coastal marshes. By installing Barn Owl boxes in suitable habitat, we are increasing the chances of successful breeding and providing researchers with a rare opportunity to study this secretive and hard-to-detect species. Many thanks go out to Zac Bohm, one of our preserve managers in New Jersey, and everyone else on the team involved in this important project.
