?? Climate finance: A pathway to equitable climate action The Financing Locally Led Climate Action Program (FLLoCA) is a game-changer for Kenya. By devolving climate finance, it empowers counties and communities to take the lead in tackling climate change, blending scientific and indigenous knowledge. With 70% of FLLoCA funds allocated for locally identified initiatives, communities are driving solutions tailored to their realities. However, challenges like inadequate consultation and entrenched inequalities must be addressed to maximize impact. By fostering inclusive participation, ensuring transparency, and amplifying marginalized voices, FLLoCA sets a blueprint for effective, community-driven climate action. How can we ensure such programs thrive? https://lnkd.in/dZjuS6HW

#Senegal #Kebetu ???????????????????????????? ?????????????????? ???? ?????????? ?????? ????????????????? ?????????? ?????????????? ??????????????

? ?? EACOP Case Update ?? The East African Court of Justice (EACJ) heard an important development last week ?in the ongoing legal challenge against the East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP). The Tanzanian government’s request to dismiss an appeal by four civil society organizations (CSOs) was rejected. Instead, the court has given the CSOs until November 29, 2024, to file additional information to support their case. This appeal, brought by Natural Justice (Kenya), AFIEGO (Uganda), CEFROHT (Uganda), and CSL (Tanzania), aims to protect the rights of communities and the environment, challenging the pipeline’s compliance with regional and international laws. The CSOs are hopeful that their case will finally be heard on its merits, emphasizing the need to prioritize people and the planet over profits. Natural Justice representatives touched down in Baku, Azerbaijan this week, where the UN’s annual global climate summit, COP29, kicked off. They’ll be among world leaders, activists, scientists and civil society who’ll be meeting to discuss urgent mitigation of climate change. Money and finance are a key focus of the climate talks this year, as discussions turn to economies that still mostly run on fossil fuels, while developed countries who bear historical responsibility fail in funding commitments to developing countries bearing the brunt of climate chaos. Azerbaijan, hosting the COP29 has also come under fire for being a petrostate, using its position as host to facilitate discussion of new fossil fuel deals at the annual UN climate conference. Worryingly too, the start of COP has seen attempts to approve false solutions and problematic #CarbonMarkets rules undermining effective #ClimateAction and protection of #HumanRights. Attending the first day, Natural Justices’ Lauren Nel, took part in a panel discussion titled, Just Transitions as Reparations. She said: “Just transitions need to have justice at the core, when phasing out fossil fuels. Energy is interlinked with other systems: food, water, economics, and land. Energy supports these systems and consideration should be made that sustainable energy is recognised internationally as a stand-alone right. The type of energy used in communities and Indigenous Peoples’ systems, should be planned; chosen and designed by the same communities to ensure it meets their needs on the ground.” Lauren makes reference to these reports: STATUS OF JET IN SEVEN SOUTHERN AFRICAN STATES: https://lnkd.in/d27_P2Wr PATH TO CLEAN ENERGY: https://lnkd.in/dKj9_id9 ? Natural Justice teams will be in Baku for the duration of the summit.?

????? Empowering Climate Journalism in Kenya! As the urgency of the climate crisis grows, so does the need for accurate and impactful reporting. ??? That’s why Natural Justice, with support from the AACJ grant, partnered with the Media Council of Kenya to train journalists on climate change reporting. ?????? During this expert-led training, journalists were equipped with essential knowledge of the latest climate terminology, Kenya’s climate agreements, and relevant laws & regulations. This initiative aims to bridge the gap in climate journalism, ensuring stories are not only told but told accurately and with impact. ????? This training is just one of the many ways Natural Justice is collaborating with the media to shift the narrative around climate change. By fostering these partnerships, we hope to create a more informed public discourse and inspire action towards a sustainable future. ????
