Start Up or Die Trying: How Pratyus Patnaik Dreamed Beyond Boundaries to Achieve Silicon Valley Success From humble beginnings in small Indian towns to leading innovative companies in Silicon Valley, Pratyus Patnaik embodies grit, curiosity, and a relentless pursuit of big ideas. As co-founder and CEO of Natoma, a company redefining identity management, his story illustrates how far dreaming—and doing—can take you. Growing up, Pratyus moved frequently across India due to his father’s job in the oil industry. This constant movement exposed him to diverse cultures and environments at a young age. A quote that has guided him since school is: “You have to dream before your dreams can come true.” For him, dreaming means actively pursuing a vision. His path took a pivotal turn when he attended Stanford University. Initially aiming for a career in academia, he soon felt the irresistible energy of Silicon Valley. “I realized it was either start-up or die trying,” he says. This led to his first company, Appurify, which addressed a practical problem he faced at Zynga with mobile app development. Within two years, Appurify was acquired by Google. Despite early success, Pratyus emphasizes that startups are about people. “The team is everything. Anytime we compromised on hiring, it never worked out,” he notes. The intense experiences in a startup forge lifelong friendships. “Those people become more than colleagues; they become friends for life.” Driven by unending curiosity, he’s always asking, “Why are we building this? How can we do it better?” At Natoma, this fuels constant innovation. “Every new feature is about fundamentally delivering the customer value,” he says. Reflecting on his journey, he shares, “I’ve learned the importance of being relentless about two things: your customers and your team. If you compromise on either, you’re in trouble.” While the journey isn’t easy, he wouldn’t trade it for anything. “Founding a company is hard, but the personal growth and chance to build something meaningful—that’s why I keep doing it.” As he looks ahead with Natoma, he’s excited about what’s to come. “It’s an exciting time to be building, learning, and growing.” In the end, it all circles back to his guiding mantra: “Dream, for only in dreaming can you achieve.” Follow Pratyus and Natoma for updates on their incredible journey!
