The NRM team continues to grow (see what we did there ??)! We are looking for another Ecological Gardener. Our Gardeners are primarily responsible for the daily stewardship of various gardens throughout Northwest Arkansas. They are constantly learning and using sustainable practices that promote plant and animal diversity. Our ideal team member should have a strong interest in native plant communities, organic land care practices, and a strong work ethic. Most importantly, they should keep an open mind to non-traditional and progressive methods of landscape management since that’s what we are all about. ?? Don't hesitate to reach out if you or anyone you know is interested in the position! #hiring #team #openposition

Check out the progress of the planting project at Lululemon in Fayetteville! ?? We removed all of the Chamaecyparis pisifera filifera, also known as Golden Charm, pictured in the first image, so that we could plant a number of new native plants in their place. ?? If you want to see some of the removal, go check out the reel we posted on Instagram a couple of weeks ago @native.restoration #nativeplants?#transformation?#growth

Let’s talk about our little friends! ?? All of our projects are designed to encourage their presence in the ecosystem. We do this by providing habitat and food in the plants we choose for our sites. One example we’ve shared in our Leafy Lessons series is Lobelia cardinalis, the Cardinal Flower. These flowers help attract many different types of native pollinators, including hummingbirds and butterflies. We also minimize our use of chemical pesticides, which helps to provide a welcoming home for beneficial insects!?????

Meet ?????????????????? ??????????????, also known as Horsetail Reed! Category: Grasses Hardiness: Zone 4-9 Height: 2.00 to 4.00 feet | Spread: 1.00 to 6.00 feet Bloom: Non-flowering | Sun: Full sun to part shade | Water: Medium to wet Horsetail Reed is a striking addition to any landscape. Resembling bamboo, these stems are hollow, jointed, and segmented. Commonly found in wetland habitats or along stream banks, it often aids in preventing erosion. It is a very aggressive plant that, if not preemptively restrained, will spread aggressively, so keep that in mind when looking to add this to your project. ?????????????????????? ?????? ?? : Once established, it can be extremely difficult to remove by digging because its rhizomes spread wide and deep, and any small section of the rhizome left behind can sprout a new plant. #HorsetailReed #LeafyLessons #NativeRestoration

The last time we discussed invasive species, we noted some of the species seen in Arkansas, but what about across the rest of the country? Not all non-native plants are bad; the ones that we are talking about are prolific seeders who are quick to grow in a variety of conditions, making it difficult for the native species to keep up. ?? Purple Loosestrife (Lythrum salicaria) ?? Japanese Honeysuckle (Lonicera japonica) ?? Japanese Barberry (Berberis thunbergii) ?? Norway Maple (Acer platanoides) ?? English Ivy (Hedera helix) ?? Kudzu (Pueraria montana var. lobata)

Meet ?????????? ??????????????????????, also known as Fox Sedge! Category: Grasses Hardiness: Zone 3-7 Height: 1.00 to 3.00 feet | Spread: 0.50 to 2.00 feet Bloom: May to July | Sun: Full sun to part shade | Water: Wet Fox sedge is a wetland sedge that forms fine-leaved mounds and a spray of bright bronze seed heads. Its deep green leaves rise from the base of the plant, forming dense and tufted clusters. The plant serves as both a habitat and a source of nutrients for a variety of wildlife. While it’s not the looker that some of these other additions might be, it does a lot to help promote biodiversity. ?????????????????????? ?????? ?? : Seeds should be planted in the fall or moist-stratified and planted in the spring. Moist stratification is a process in which the seed is mixed with a moistened inert material, such as peat moss or fresh sawdust, and then stored cold for a period of time. #FoxSedge #LeafyLessons #NativeRestoration
