Is meniscal root pathology actually an MTL problem? New research suggests that meniscotibial ligament (MTL) injury plays a primary role in meniscal root pathology. This biomechanical study by Anderson et al.-no, not our Dr. Anderson, but another leader in the field, shows that MTL disruption increases force on the meniscal root—potentially setting the stage for root tears. Clinical studies back this up, with findings that MTL damage and meniscal extrusion often precede meniscal root injuries (Krych et al, AJSM). The takeaway? Meniscal centralization and MTL repair may be key to restoring native meniscal forces and improving patient outcomes. ??
