?? Today is Indigenous Peoples’ Day, a day that has been reclaimed in a testament to the strength of Native organizing in recent years. With climate change fueling more powerful and destructive storms, we must urgently implement traditional Indigenous stewardship practices and ecological knowledge of living in balance with the natural world. As Indigenous peoples have always done, we’re standing for sovereignty, economic justice, and saving Mother Earth. Happy Indigenous Peoples' Day, today and everyday.

Author, former elected official, Founder & CEO of The Regular & Head of Innovation & Philanthropy at Giving Compass. Supporting tech and social impact initiatives that move resources to people who need them.

This conversation with Judith LeBlanc really brought me joy and expanded my thinking about the role that native communities play in driving change. As usual, one of my takeaways was how limited we often are in how we think about "innovation" and how much we harm ourselves with our preconceptions of where new and better approaches can come from. Check out the conversation and consider supporting the work of Native Organizers Alliance, part of the Giving Compass vetted nonprofit network, particularly as we think about the consequences to the environment and communities depending on the results of this year's elections in the US.

Today is #ORANGEShirtDay - September 30, in honor and remembrance of the thousands of Indigenous children who were sent to residential schools, for those who never returned, and for those whose lives were forever changed. Today & every day, let us commit ourselves to remember, to honor the lives taken, to learn more, and to stop further devastation, genocide and family separation from happening. To address the ongoing impacts of Indian boarding schools, The Truth and Healing Commission on Indian Boarding School Policies Act has been introduced. If passed, this landmark legislation would establish a federal commission to investigate, document, and acknowledge the historical harms — a vital step toward healing and rebuilding trust with Native communities. ?? The history of Indian Boarding School policies is one of deep trauma. These policies removed hundreds of thousands of Native children from their families aiming to erase Native languages, cultures, and traditions. Today, and every year on September 30, we specifically remember the children who never came home. ????? It’s also vital to recognize the survivors their families, and communities affected by these policies. We must work to restore Native languages and cultures that were disrupted by these horrible actions. ?We spent the last two weekends with some incredible fellows who are ready to spread the word about the power of the Native Vote! The first weekend we were in Chicago and the second in Detroit. Fellows connected to likeminded folks, learned about narrative sovereignty, and even got to try our phone banking! These photos remind us of the importance of community. The time we spent together was filled with energy, community, engagement, expertise, and medicine.
