Native-led nonprofit supporting Native nations in strengthening their sovereignty. [email protected] | (651) 571-0826

关于我们

Native Governance Center is a Native American-led nonprofit organization that assists Native nations in strengthening their systems of governance and capacity to exercise sovereignty. We opened our doors in January 2016 in response to a need identified by Tribal leaders from the 23 Native nations that share geography with Mni Sota Makoce, North Dakota, and South Dakota. These leaders asked for an organization that would meet the increasing demand for Indigenous governance and leadership development resources in the region. We work to meet this demand by teaching a Native nation rebuilding approach. Our on-the-ground experience and our deep understanding of academic research tell us that Native nation rebuilding is a powerful strategy for transforming lives. The rebuilding framework consists of five research-based strategies for strengthening Indigenous governance. Native nations with stronger governance systems are better able to use their sovereignty to determine their own future and improve their quality of life. To this end, we’re working to cultivate a Native nation rebuilding movement; we envision this movement leading to a future where all Indigenous people can thrive on their own terms. We see abundance, restoration, community building, brainstorming, and centering Indigeneity as elements of this new future. To further the movement, our organization provides Native nations with customized resources, learning experiences, and technical assistance related to Indigenous governance. We also train Indigenous changemakers through our Native Nation Rebuilders program, a program founded on Indigenous values and real-life leadership and governance success stories. Finally, we help our greater community better understand the concepts fundamental to our work; we know we won’t fully meet our goals without broad public support.

Thank you to the Minnesota Council of Nonprofits for featuring Native Governance Center (NGC) in their Summer 2024 newsletter! Last year, NGC was the recipient of the Minnesota Council of Nonprofits’ 2023 Mission Award for Anti-Racism Initiative. This award recognizes organizations that actively engage audiences in anti-racism activities. Our innovative, free-to-the-public Tribal education and advocacy offerings (and our Wings with Wayne series) received special mention in the piece. Some of our staff were able to attend the Native Americans in Philanthropy 2024 conference where they delved into Indigenizing philanthropy! Key takeaways include the importance of community-led solutions and long-term funding to combat systemic issues. We explored how Indigenous wisdom often precedes mainstream solutions, urging us to challenge biases and embrace diverse perspectives. Let's rethink knowledge sources for a more equitable future. What did you takeaway from the conference?

This past week, I had the opportunity to attend the Native Americans in Philanthropy 2024 annual conference, where the focus was on Indigenizing philanthropy. It was an exploration into the necessity for funders to not only provide resources, but to also entrust communities with the agency to devise their own solutions, as well as the critical need for sustained, long-term funding (10+ years) to effectively address the deep-seated issues of disinvestment and systemic oppression. One theme that reverberated throughout the conference was the realization that many of the current solutions championed by academia and mainstream institutions are not new at all—they are, in fact, deeply rooted in the ancestral wisdom of Indigenous peoples. It's a stark realization that the validation of these solutions only seems to materialize when they are endorsed by those in power, a narrative that speaks volumes about the inherent biases within our systems. Reflecting on this, I recall a recent visit to the Bell Museum, where an exhibit showcased the collaborative efforts between scientists and Indigenous communities to enhance stewardship of the land. It was a striking display of how Indigenous knowledge, steeped in centuries of experience, was previously dismissed simply because it didn't conform to Western scientific paradigms. As we contemplate the next seven generations, particularly within predominantly white communities, it's incumbent upon us to reevaluate our understanding of knowledge and its sources. True progress lies in embracing diverse perspectives and recognizing that wisdom can be gleaned from avenues beyond the confines of traditional academia. It's a journey that begins with the humbling act of opening our hearts and minds to alternative viewpoints—a step toward a more inclusive and equitable society for all. I've compiled additional insights that struck a chord with me during the conference. Unfortunately, my note-taking skills leave something to be desired, so I regret that I can't provide proper attribution for each one. *Self-determination is "knowing who the self is in self-determination" - AlexAnna Salmon,?Tribal Village of Igiugig, Tribal President *Self-determination means being afforded the opportunity to make our own mistakes. *The US national debt does not include treaty responsibility debt owed to Native nations, because it is not viewed as debt. - Kitcki Carroll,?United South and Eastern Tribes, Inc., Executive Director presenting on the Marshall Plan for Tribal Nations. *"Indigenous people are the original philanthropists." Also, there was an 9a.m. rap session courtesy of Tall Paul. I've been to many shows, but never at 9a.m., so thank you NAP for that first.

Tribal Finance Rules! was the theme the Native Governance Center crew brought to The National Center For American Indian Enterprise Development 2024 Reservation Economic Summit. We spent the week sharing how Native nations can rebuild Tribal finance by infusing Native Nation Rebuilding principles (developed by the?Harvard Project on American Indian Economic Development and Native Nations Institute) and learnings from our pilot program into their finance systems and financial leadership. We presented to a packed room of over 200 attendees (don't be fooled by the photo, they are on their phones using our interactive tools and were very engaged!), shared research, tips, and tools to bring back home to their nations, and enjoyed engaging with 4,000+ attendees. Special thanks to my colleagues Cree Rose Dueker Jessica Glidden Michaela Madrid and Michelle Red Day for all their hard work. Mystic Cournoyer for helping us present. CLA (CliftonLarsonAllen) Ben Aase Samuel T. Owl Jr. Adrienne Good Bear, MSA Ryan Grigonis Wayne Ducheneaux Camila Fonseca Isabel Marsh for being our pilot program partners.
