The National Park Service preserves, protects, and shares our nation's special places and stories.

关于我们

Most people know that the National Park Service cares for national parks, a network of over 420 natural, cultural and recreational sites across the nation. The treasures in this system – the first of its kind in the world – have been set aside by the American people to preserve, protect, and share the legacies of this land. People from all around the world visit national parks to experience America's story, marvel at the natural wonders, and have fun. Places like the Grand Canyon, the Statue of Liberty, and Gettysburg are popular destinations, but so too are the hundreds of lesser known yet equally meaningful gems like Rosie the Riveter in California, Boston Harbor Islands in Massachusetts, and Russell Cave in Alabama. The American system of national parks was the first of its kind in the world, and provides a living model for other nations wishing to establish and manage their own protected areas. The park service actively consults with these Nations, sharing what we've learned, and gaining knowledge from the experience of others. Beyond national parks, the National Park Service helps communities across America preserve and enhance important local heritage and close-to-home recreational opportunities. Grants and assistance are offered to register, record and save historic places; create community parks and local recreation facilities; conserve rivers and streams, and develop trails and greenways.

It’s Friday the 13th! Whether you find yourself in a national park or just facing everyday spooky obstacles, fear not, for we have compiled a list of helpful (debatable) tips to help guide you through the day unscathed. May the odds ever be in your favor. Just remember: 1. You don’t have to investigate every strange noise. ?? Ch ch ch ah ah ah. What was that? Bigfoot? Two marmots having a spat? Your stomach growling because you didn’t pack enough snacks? Some things in life are better left a mystery. It doesn’t hurt to zip up your tent and think positively. 2. Watch where you’re running. ????????♀? Why are you running? In a straight line? You gotta mix it up with a zig then zag. Also, watch out for twisted tree roots and the occasional rock. They care for no one and will trip you up just when you thought everything was fine. Also, you’re still in the parking lot. 3: He’s not that cute. ?? Oh my gosh, like, as if! That squirrel is, like, totally adorbs with its fluffy tail and those cute little paws. And that bison, like, needs a friend for sure, but, like, let's not forget that squirrels can totally bite, especially from the bitey end, and that the bison has all the friends they need. Now, like, who packed the bandages and the extra leg splint? 4. Avoid cornfields.?? Did that scarecrow just wave? The only good to come out of a cornfield is, well, corn. Oh, look at that cute Junior Ranger. Wait, are their eyes glowing? What’s with the haircut? Stay calm. Let’s not get husk-terical! 5: Keep your phone charged. Don’t get caught with a dead battery. Even in a crisis, you never know when you'll need to play a video of two cats lip-synching to “Don't Stop Meow” that could attract unwanted attention or lose the ability to frantically search an App for the nearest abandoned bathroom next to a cemetery that is definitely not haunted. Found one! Oh, ?? 6. Don’t split up. ?? Splitting up is so cliche. Friends should stick together for a most enjoyable visit. Friendly reminder: make a mental note of which one of you could outrun a bear. Also, which one of you would most likely push the other down in an attempt to save themselves. If you’re currently asking yourself the second one, you’re already on the ground. Good luck. 7. Don’t light any weird-looking candles or leave campfires unattended. ??? You make think is just a bit of hocus pocus, but the flickering flames of an ancient candle or the light of a cackling fire may beckon unseen spirits (or those loud campers from next door running amok, amok, amok, amok) out of the shadows. Form a calming circle and put out that flame! Image: A tent at night surrounded by tall trees at Katahdin Woods and Waters, Maine. NPS/Sarah King
