"Trump’s late January order to stop new admissions — and a second directive that cut off funding to agencies that support those already here — has put people in life-threatening situations." Read the full article in The Philadelphia Inquirer to learn more about how the ecosystem of organizations supporting newly arrived refugees, including NSC, is reacting to this new cruel reality. Please share this article broadly. Thank you. https://lnkd.in/e7fwBkXC #westandwithimmigrants

Globally, over 122 million people have been forcibly displaced—more than 43 million of them are refugees. Ongoing crises in Venezuela, Afghanistan, Ukraine, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), and Sudan continue to force millions to flee their homes in search of safety. On January 24th, NSC learned of a Suspension Letter from the US State Department indicating that all services and financial assistance for newly arrived refugees must stop immediately while a broad review of Foreign Aid programs is conducted. This means that months of support that NSC was in the process of providing 200+ newly arrived refugees must stop with no warning. Without this support, our clients will be deprived of critical services such as rental assistance, food access, and health and wellness resources. We must underscore the cruelty of this Suspension Letter, given that it will leave our newly arrived clients, who were brought here through a lawful process of 3rd party resettlement through the Biden Administration, in dire circumstances. As such, we are particularly grateful to the Ranking Members of the House and Senate Judiciary Committees and Immigration Sub-Committees for sending this letter to Secretary of State Marco Rubio appealing for a just end to the suspension of the Reception & Placement Program - a program which has received broad bi-partisan support since the US Congress first passed the US Refugee Admissions Act of 1980. We urge you to contact your local representatives, Senator David McCormick and Senator John Fetterman, to support the appeal against the suspension of the Reception & Placement Program. Join us in standing with immigrants! Thank you to the signatories: Senator Richard Durbin, Senator Alex Padilla, and Ranking House Committee Members Jamie Raskin and Pramila Jayapal Read the full letter here: https://bit.ly/4aGllaN Rep. NSC's Anti-Human Trafficking Program, alongside other members of the Philadelphia Anti-Trafficking Coalition, was recently recognized with a Proclamation from Philadelphia City Council, sponsored by Minority Leader Council Member Brooks. Staff from our Anti-Human Trafficking Program attended the reading and passing of the proclamation and were able to share a testimony on behalf of our program. This recognition is a testament to the collective efforts to combat human trafficking and support survivors.
