Lakes High School | FCCLA Region 7 Appreciation Post! Region 7 recently held its Fall Leadership Meeting at Kittitas Secondary School. During this meeting, the entire region chose to support Explore.Act.Tell. and celebrated their kick-off activity in helping to reduce hunger in their community. In addition, each chapter brought a gift basket to raffle off during the meeting, with all proceeds going to Nourishing Neighbors. The meeting raised $293.50 to address community hunger. KUDOS!!!! Since 1945, #MoxieAwardDC, finalist, Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA), has empowered young leaders through innovative Family and Consumer Sciences education. Founded initially as Future Homemakers of America, FCCLA rebranded in 1999 to expand its mission, addressing critical youth issues such as teen pregnancy and substance abuse. With programs like STAR (Students Taking Action with Recognition), FCCLA fosters personal growth and job skills in a supportive environment. The organization has adapted to challenges, including a seamless transition to virtual competitions during the pandemic, showcasing its resilience and commitment. Ever hear “Bring Home Ec back” or “every child should take Home Ec like we used to”?? Well… the good news is – that it doesn’t need to be brought back as it has not gone away but has progressed over the past 100 years to continue to meet the needs of each generation and is now titled Family and Consumer Sciences(FCS).?And, YES– every single student should be required to take FCS to be empowered with skillsets not only for career success but life success. To find out more about the power and possibility of FCS, I am excited to share a new resource that highlights the overview of FCS and how FCS continues today to prepare students for relevant and vitally important career clusters taught by educated and professional FCS educators.?I hope you enjoy this article and help spread the word to those who comment that we need to “bring Home Ec back” that it is available across the country and if your child’s school does not offer it, advocate for them to add it and if FCS is offered in your child’s school make sure to get your child(ren) enrolled in FCS!
