“Who can change policy?” asked Jessica Henson, ASLA, PLA, partner at OLIN, a landscape architecture firm. “In our plans, we landscape architects often say policymakers should do this or that.” But it’s important to identify which entity — county, state, or federal government — is able to change policy and what form of advocacy can make it happen. In an online discussion organized by the ASLA Biodiversity and Climate Action Committee, Henson explained OLIN’s work to advocate for change through the new Los Angeles River Master Plan. Megan Terry, ASLA, PLA, Michelle Garza, Hayden Akana, and Eileen Takata offered perspectives on successful climate advocacy in Butte, Montana; San Antonio, Texas; and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
