Farmers across the country are dealing with the impacts of #climatechange every day, and many face barriers to adopting #conservation practices that can play a key role in building #climate resilience, such as cost, insecure #landaccess, and lack of technical assistance. As a result, many farmers rely on each other for mentorship and support. We need policy solutions that support the resources farmers already provide each other. The Farmer-to-Farmer Education Act, if included in the next #farmbill, would build support for farmer-led conservation education, connecting farmers with peers to successfully adopt more conservation practices. Young Farmers organizes and supports farmers in conducting in-districts every April and August, when Representatives and Senators leave Washington, D.C. and return to their districts to meet with their constituents. This summer, 14 farmers across the country hosted meetings with their federal legislators, advocating for the Coalition’s priorities as well as their own. They met rural and urban legislators across party lines, and chatted with offices with varying degrees of familiarity with farming. Thank you Snooze A.M. Hurricane Helene left devastation across the Southeast and Appalachia after making landfall in the Big Bend Region of Florida as a Category 4 hurricane last week. Storm surge and high wind speeds left destruction along Florida’s west coast, and rainfall records were broken along the storm’s path, with western North Carolina receiving some of the highest rainfall counts—more than 30 inches in some places. More than 100 people lost their lives due to the storm. We’re hearing from farmers in our network how dire the situation is in western North Carolina. In Asheville, where some of the worst flooding occurred, people are experiencing limited access to food, water, electricity, and cell phone service. Most of the roads into and out of Buncombe county are inaccessible, and many farms in the area have sustained major crop damage and are underwater. Young Farmers, the Latino Economic Development Center, the Land Stewardship Project, and the Conservation Fund had the opportunity to host Robert Bonnie, the Under Secretary?of Agriculture for?Farm Production and Conservation, at The Good Acre Food Hub to discuss their plan for the Increasing Land, Capital, and Market Access Program award they received. Over 45 projects nationwide were awarded funds through this program to address the need for equitable #landaccess for BIPOC and #youngfarmers. This program was a one-time funding opportunity that we believe should be made permanent through the next #farmbill.
