How does the legacy of World War I – the defining conflict of the 20th century – inform our perspective on “just” war today? When President Woodrow Wilson led the United States into WWI to “make the world safe for democracy,” it marked an end of American isolationism and initiated an era of global democratization. Despite the efforts of multinational coalitions like the Triple Entente and League of Nations, crises have persisted throughout the 20th and 21st centuries, revealing the strategic and ethical complexities that define modern conflict and its impact on our global society. Join us Nov. 15-16 for a Digital Summit to explore the subject of war and morality. Registration open now: https://lnkd.in/g2nq5xZ5 Historians and military professionals will delve into varied perspectives on questions such as: ?? What is a “just” war? ?? What are the ethics of war (e.g. The Hague, Geneva Conventions)? ??Who is the most reliable judge of a war’s morality? ?? Is it important to judge the morality of World War I? ?? What standards has WWI set for contemporary war ethics? ?? How have international norms changed? Is war a driver of international laws on armed conflict? ?? What justifies a pre-emptive strike? What are the moral and ethical implications? ??? How does a lack of “rules of engagement” contribute to war crimes and reinforce opposition/resistance? ?? How do effective “rules of engagement” contribute to success at both a tactical and strategic level? ?? Are “rules of engagement” more than just moral tools in operations? Does the conflicts scope affect their value? ?? Can a nation achieve victory through strategic bombardment alone? ???What role do rules of engagement (ROE) play in mission success and how can their absence reinforce opposition? ?? Should military education and strategy focus on winning war or preventing them? This event is a partnership between the National WWI Museum and Memorial, The Western Front Association, Modern War Institute at West Point, International Society for First World War Studies, WORLD WAR ONE HISTORICAL ASSOCIATION and the International Relations Council.

Opening day for a new section of the main gallery at the National WWI Museum and Memorial. After great work from our staff and partners, including Taylor Studios, Inc., RLMG., Donna Lawrence Productions and Electrosonic, and due to generous donor support, we open Stage 4 of a 6 six-stage refresh. Fabulous for our visitors to have an even deeper understanding of WWI and its enduring impact.

September is National Save Your Photos Month! ?? ??? ?? How do we save photos taken a hundred years ago? Our Curatorial staff put together some pro tips on archival best practices that you can use at home! 1?? Use clean hands. #TheGlovesAreOff 2?? Store photos in acid-free boxes away from temperature/humidity fluctuations. 3?? Do not force curled photos flat. 4?? Use a non-mechanical pencil to record names/dates and other info. 5?? DON'T use: tape, binder clips/rubber bands or lamination. 6?? Organize digital files and periodically check on them. ?Bonus tip: Print a high-resolution scan of your photo to put on display and keep the original safely tucked away. Also makes for a great gift for loved ones! #museumpractices #archives #historicpreservation #acidfree #paperconservation #conservation #curator #bestpractices

This week, we were honored to convene World War I thought leaders from over 20 institutions and nine countries. We look forward to continued partnership between our organizations as we work to highlight the enduring impact of the Great War. Thank you to our friends at the In Flanders Fields Museum in Ypres who hosted this important meeting.
Just back from a terrific couple of days spent in the Ypres Salient with inspiring colleagues as part of the World War I Museums and Institutions Convocation. And even got to read The Exhortation for the Last Post, an absolute honour and privilege. Thanks to Matthew Naylor, PhD for his continued leadership, Stephen Lodewyck and Els Veraverbeke for their wonderful hospitality, and all the other attendees for their great ideas and better company

Blood was stored for future transfusions for the first time in World War I. In recognition of this life-saving achievement, the Museum and Memorial was pleased to partner with the American Red Cross Missouri and Arkansas Region and KCTV/KSMO/tv for this donation event!
Recently, we partnered with KCTV/KSMO/tv and the National WWI Museum and Memorial to host a blood drive at the museum. This first-time drive was a huge success, and brought out lots of familiar faces and first-time donors!
