Uniting all Americans to ensure wildlife thrive in a rapidly changing world.
关于我们
As America's largest non-profit conservation organization, the National Wildlife Federation works closely with those who span the social and political spectrum, but who are connected by a common commitment to conservation. Our ability to meet the needs of wildlife is inextricably linked to the over 6 million amazing individuals, groups, organizations and corporations we call our supporters. Our mission is to unite all Americans to ensure wildlife thrive in a rapidly changing world. Through conservation efforts, grassroots actions, education programs, and award-winning publications (including National Wildlife, Ranger Rick, and Ranger Rick Jr.) we connect with people across the nation to safeguard America’s wildlife and wild places.

Ruby-throated hummingbirds move exceptionally quickly, they are capable of rapidly beating their wings more than 50 times a second. It's possible to hear the beat of the wings, which make a humming sound, hence the bird's name. These hummingbirds are very small, growing only 3.5 inches (nine centimeters) tall and weighing less than a quarter of an ounce (seven grams). However, they eat approximately every 15 minutes to maintain their energy. They must enter deep torpor every night and greatly reduce metabolic activity, or they would expend all energy reserves and die in their sleep, hence their need to visit so many flowers each day. #wildlife #nature #hummingbirds #funfacts #birds

Everything is bigger in Texas ?? The Texas horned lizard is a spiny-bodied reptile. It's the largest and most widely distributed of the 14 species of horned lizards in the western United States and Mexico. Despite their fierce appearance, Texas horned lizards are extremely docile creatures. Horned lizards are excellent diggers, and can quickly burrow underground to escape threats. Most of their diet consists of ants, beetles, and grasshoppers. At night, they bury themselves in the sand to sleep. They have the ability to squirt an aimed stream of blood from the corners of the eyes and sometimes from their mouth for a distance of over 3 ft (1 m) to defend themselves from predators. It's safe to say they have developed a few ~unique~ strategies to deter predators. #wildlife #nature #funfacts #lizards #wildlifealphabet

Everything Leaves a Trace ???? Environmental DNA, or eDNA, is helping scientists locate elusive wildlife—from rare and endangered species to emerging invasives. Using a standard-issue paint roller, slightly dampened with water, the researchers attach a long handle and roll its cylindrical nap along the bark and foliage of trees to swab for evidence of wildlife; a method called tree rolling. In one study that surveyed 21 trees in two New Jersey oak-hickory forests, Lockwood says she and her team were able to estimate about 90 percent of the mammal species living in an area of more than 400 acres—all in a single day. Scanning for eDNA is also helping scientists detect signs of invasive species more accurately—and hopefully sooner—than searching by sight. Want to learn more about eDNA? Just keep swimming ???? There are 7 species of Pacific salmon globally and just 1 species of Atlantic salmon. While Pacific and Atlantic salmon are distantly related, they have many chromosomal differences and cannot interbreed. The oldest salmon record in North America comes from sabertooth salmon fossils that date up to 7 million years ago. These prehistoric fish could grow up to 3 meters long! Salmon are typically anadromous, meaning they live in both fresh and saltwater over the course of their lives. They are born in freshwater, journey to the ocean, and then return to freshwater streams to spawn. #wildlife #alphabet #salmon #nature #funfacts

A Monarch Migration ?? In South-Central Mexico, where monarchs conclude their southern migration around the national holiday of Dia de los Muertos, the butterflies symbolize the souls of departed loved ones and a chance for conservation success. Millions of monarchs depart breeding grounds east of the Rocky Mountains in southern Canada and the northern United States every fall en route to the Mexican states of Michoacán and México. The migration, stretching up to 3,000 miles, takes just a couple of months. These monarchs are not the same ones that visited the year before. So how do they know where to migrate?
