Searchin’ for a sea urchin? ???? Urchins are a broad group of about 950 species of underwater invertebrate animals found across the globe. In the US, they are found from the coasts of Alaska to southern California, and Maine down to Florida. An ancient class of animals, urchins first evolved on Earth 450 million years ago. While they can come in many colors, shapes, and sizes, the most recognizable urchins are round, brightly colored, and spikey. An urchin’s mouth is called Aristotle’s lantern and has five sharp teeth. It is located at the bottom of their body so that they can easily eat algae as they move around the ocean floor. #wildlife #seaurchin #nature #funfacts #alphabet #ocean

The 2024 Wood Furniture Scorecard is published! ???? Initiated by the Sustainable Furnishings Council and the National Wildlife Federation in 2018, this scorecard champions responsible wood sourcing in the furniture industry. Forests, essential for biodiversity and clean air, are at risk with deforestation being a major contributor to climate change. The goal of the scorecard is to encourage furniture retailers, large and small, to implement robust policies that drive responsible wood sourcing practices through their complex supply chains. Forests are crucial, and we must protect the trees and the forest biodiversity. They provide vital habitats for thousands of species, livelihood for people, and cleaner air for all life on the planet we share. Deforestation is a major contributing cause of climate change. Furniture manufacturers are major consumers of wood and have an enormous responsibility to harvest and use wood sustainably. Consumers wield tremendous influence over retailers, so check out the 2024 Scorecard and the companies receiving High and Top Scores! Ruby-throated hummingbirds move exceptionally quickly, they are capable of rapidly beating their wings more than 50 times a second. It's possible to hear the beat of the wings, which make a humming sound, hence the bird's name. These hummingbirds are very small, growing only 3.5 inches (nine centimeters) tall and weighing less than a quarter of an ounce (seven grams). However, they eat approximately every 15 minutes to maintain their energy. They must enter deep torpor every night and greatly reduce metabolic activity, or they would expend all energy reserves and die in their sleep, hence their need to visit so many flowers each day. #wildlife #nature #hummingbirds #funfacts #birds

Everything is bigger in Texas ?? The Texas horned lizard is a spiny-bodied reptile. It's the largest and most widely distributed of the 14 species of horned lizards in the western United States and Mexico. Despite their fierce appearance, Texas horned lizards are extremely docile creatures. Horned lizards are excellent diggers, and can quickly burrow underground to escape threats. Most of their diet consists of ants, beetles, and grasshoppers. At night, they bury themselves in the sand to sleep. They have the ability to squirt an aimed stream of blood from the corners of the eyes and sometimes from their mouth for a distance of over 3 ft (1 m) to defend themselves from predators. It's safe to say they have developed a few ~unique~ strategies to deter predators. #wildlife #nature #funfacts #lizards #wildlifealphabet

Everything Leaves a Trace ???? Environmental DNA, or eDNA, is helping scientists locate elusive wildlife—from rare and endangered species to emerging invasives. Using a standard-issue paint roller, slightly dampened with water, the researchers attach a long handle and roll its cylindrical nap along the bark and foliage of trees to swab for evidence of wildlife; a method called tree rolling. In one study that surveyed 21 trees in two New Jersey oak-hickory forests, Lockwood says she and her team were able to estimate about 90 percent of the mammal species living in an area of more than 400 acres—all in a single day. Scanning for eDNA is also helping scientists detect signs of invasive species more accurately—and hopefully sooner—than searching by sight. Want to learn more about eDNA?
