In celebration of Black History Month, teams across NVA have come together to honor the monumental achievements and legacy of the Black community. While celebrating history is important, working toward a more inclusive future is just as crucial.? ? In support of that goal, our community group, NVA Black Allies, shares ways we’re focused on empowering black veterinary professionals year-round, including:? ? ?? Partnering with the National Association for Black Veterinarians (NABV) to advocate and support black professionals in veterinary medicine at all levels? ?? Sponsoring vet students to attend NABV’s annual conference to build connections and grow their careers? ?? Providing scholarships at Tuskegee University and Purdue University to advance diversity in veterinary medicine? ?? Mentoring undergraduate students within our clinics through Purdue University’s Vet Up! program to help them prepare for competitive veterinary school applications? ? A routine dental cleaning became a life-saving moment for a patient at NVA’s Mannsdale Animal Clinic. ??♀???? ?? Diego, a playful and energetic dog, was due for a routine dental cleaning and neuter at Mannsdale. As with all of their anesthetic procedures, Diego received pre-anesthetic blood work, which came back clear. But during his physical exam, Dr. Angelena Heath said Diego’s abdomen was swollen and firm to the touch. His owner told the team that he had been eating, drinking, and playing like usual—everything seemed normal.?? ?? Dr. Heath decided to conduct further testing. X-rays revealed a large mass in Diego’s abdomen, and an ultrasound pointed to his spleen. "Pets like Diego can’t tell us when something is wrong, which is why we do what we do,” says Dr. Heath.??? ?? With the help of Dr. Laura Leigh Winford, Dr. Heath performed an exploratory laparotomy and removed a 5-pound splenic tumor. “Luckily, Diego’s mass was benign, but it could have been fatal if left undetected," Dr. Heath explains.?? ?? Following the surgery, Diego spent the night in their clinic for monitoring and was soon back home, playing and enjoying life. "Diego loves everyone at Mannsdale!" says his owner Mila. “I’ve never had a pet who actually enjoys going to the vet until we found Mannsdale. Dr. Heath, you are a true lifesaver!” ????? ?? Diego’s case serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of preventive care and routine visits. “To be able to look at them and do a great nose-to-tail exam to sometimes find things that owners may not have been aware of can make all the difference in their medical care," says Dr. Heath. The Kansas City Chiefs’ mascot returned to NVA’s Eagle Animal Hospital to visit his favorite veterinarian, Dr. Matthew Silvius before the big game. After a quick check-up (and some tasty treats), he received a clean bill of health and the all-clear to cheer on Kansas City.? ?
