This Friday the Thirteenth, imagine kayaking the tranquil waters of a secluded cove on the lower Potomac River only to be confronted with rusted iron ribs protruding from the water and leading to the ghostly outline of a ship just below the surface. This is the Ghost Fleet of the Potomac, the largest and most varied collection of historic shipwrecks in the Western Hemisphere, spanning over three centuries of American shipbuilding and comprising approximately 200 vessels. Why did so many shipwrecks end up here? And how did those vessels unexpectedly become an ecological sanctuary? Uncover the mystery: https://ow.ly/46Pq50Q1bBq

“One of the beautiful things about the model is that folks who are lower income, hard-working, and can't afford to go out to a nice restaurant, can come to Gather55 to celebrate their wedding anniversary or their child's graduation, or just enjoy a special evening—something we all deserve.”? 2023 Backing Historic Small Restaurant grantee Gather 55 is Connecticut's first pay-what-you-can restaurant. The model addresses food insecurity with an innovative approach that allows patrons the opportunity to pay for their meals by contributing financially or volunteering their time. We are now accepting nominations for the 2025 list of America’s 11 Most Endangered Historic Places! Since 1988, the National Trust has used its list of America's 11 Most Endangered Historic Places to raise awareness about the threats facing some of our nation's greatest treasures. The list, which has identified more than 350 sites to date, has been so successful in galvanizing preservation efforts that only a handful of these sites have been lost. As part of the National Trust’s continued commitment to telling the full American story, we particularly invite nominations for historic places that highlight a unique or overlooked aspect of American history and that expand our understanding of our shared national heritage. The deadline to submit a nomination is October 8, 2024. Review the guidelines and nominate an endangered site today: https://ow.ly/ysbo50TfKJr

Challenges associated with insuring both commercial and residential historic properties have become increasingly more difficult. In July 2024 the National Trust hosted a webinar with key leaders from the insurance, non-profit, and state historic preservation regulatory sectors to talk about what you need to know about the state of the insurance industry today, what is driving up costs, and what you may be able to do about it. Watch the webinar recording and read a Q&A comprised of questions that we weren't able to answer during the session. https://ow.ly/bCbK50Tabjv
