关于我们
The National Strategic Research Institute (NSRI) at the University of Nebraska (NU) is one of 15 Department of Defense (DOD)-established University Affiliated Research Centers (UARCs) in the United States. UARCs are research organizations within a university or college that are established to provide or maintain essential engineering, research and/or development capabilities through a long-term, strategic relationship with the DoD. Established in 2012, with the DoD sponsor, United States Strategic Command (USSTRATCOM), NSRI helps the Department of Defense and other federal agencies meet evolving national security objectives across all domains by responsively delivering innovative research and solutions while developing the workforce. The success of NSRI is driven by our collaboration with the University of Nebraska System, providing unique access to academic perspectives and research methods not currently found anywhere else in the DOD. Our research community includes more than 350 researchers in diverse disciplines and state-of-the-art facilities to generate innovative, real-world solutions. Furthermore, projects undertaken from an academic perspective ensures that critical skill sets are nurtured, developed and remain available for sustaining the mission in the future. NSRI has established and developed a research portfolio to address the research needs and advance the mission of USSTRATCOM and other DOD entities. Working with our sponsors and partners, we generate cutting-edge research solutions in the prevention, detection, protection, response and recovery from threats.

#NSRIFellow Mark Hamill, MD, a professor in the University of Nebraska Medical Center Department of Surgery, Division of Acute Care Surgery, has been inducted into the prestigious American College of Surgeons Academy of Master Surgeon Educators. He joins two other UNMC colleagues in being inducted as members: Joshua Mammen, MD, PhD, chief of the UNMC Division of?Surgical Oncology, and Jeffrey P. Gold, M.D., current president of the University of Nebraska System and former UNMC chancellor who holds a tenured faculty appointment as a professor in the UNMC Department of Surgery and UNMC College of Public Health. “When I was granted associate membership into the ACS Academy of Master Surgeon Educators several years ago, at the induction ceremony I was seated between two master surgeons — who wrote some of the textbooks I used during residency and fellowship,” Dr. Hamill said. “It’s quite an honor to be similarly recognized and granted membership into the academy. “My hope for the future is to continue in my efforts to advance surgical and critical care education on the local, national and international levels.” --- Read the full article ?? https://lnkd.in/gBRztHcm --- #military #militarymedicine #militaryhealth #surgeon #research #defenseresearch #Nebraska #Omaha

A record nine Husker researchers earned National Science Foundation (NSF) Faculty Early Career Development Program awards in 2024, placing the University of Nebraska-Lincoln among the nation’s most successful institutions in earning awards through one of the most prestigious grant programs for rising scholars. The new institutional record, which amounts to $6.2 million in CAREER funding for Husker faculty, positions Nebraska at the forefront of CAREER success nationally. According to data from the National Center for Education Statistics, Nebraska is one of 25 academic institutions to receive nine or more CAREER awards in 2024. Nebraska is tied with Carnegie Mellon University and Stanford University and outpaces many other leading institutions, including the University of Chicago and Yale University. Via Omaha World-Herald: Three infectious diseases experts with the University of Nebraska Medical Center’s Global Center for Health Security have returned to Omaha after spending about two weeks in Rwanda assisting with the east African nation’s response to an outbreak of Marburg virus disease, a type of hemorrhagic fever. #NSRIFellow Dr. James Lawler, an associate director of the center, said he and two other team members weren’t involved in caring for patients but instead helped develop training plans, programs and materials to assist the Rwandan health care system and communities mitigate the risk of disease transmission. International partnerships, Lawler said, are important for the global center’s overall health security mission and proved invaluable during the early response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The center was involved in the return of American citizens from Wuhan, China, after the pandemic began and in monitoring and caring for Americans evacuated from a COVID-stricken cruise ship off the coast of Japan soon after. That effort resulted in some early insights into how the virus spread, among others. “Engaging and (becoming) involved in outbreaks internationally helps our team, because we continue to build our skills that we can apply here,” Lawler said, “which makes us better, which makes us all safer.” --- Access the full article ?? https://lnkd.in/gUeCTeiN --- #infectiousdisease #healthcare #medicalresearch #preparedness #response #firstresponders #pandemic #

As digital communication grows, the electromagnetic spectrum (EMS) is becoming increasingly crowded. Novel solutions for how the U.S. can effectively share the spectrum are critical to national objectives, several of which were outlined in the November 2023?Presidential Memorandum?on Modernizing United States Spectrum Policy and Establishing a National Spectrum Strategy. Researchers from the National Strategic Research Institute (NSRI) at the University of Nebraska and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln School of Computing are developing novel artificial intelligence (AI) deep learning techniques to model EMS environments and adapt them to use dynamic sharing techniques. United States Strategic Command, which sponsors NSRI as a DOD-designated University Affiliated Research Center, awarded the institute nearly $1.7 million for the effort, "AI Enabled Transceivers for Dynamic Spectrum Sharing Applications." "We are exploring a solution that will allow maximum spectrum utilization for all sectors," said?Al “Hitcher” Geist, NSRI director for joint electromagnetic spectrum operations. "If we can get this right in this project, and as a Nation, we can help ensure U.S. superiority in the EMS and potentially enable billions of dollars in savings and economic growth." --- Read the full announcement ?? https://lnkd.in/gq3WyDGb JEMSO capabilities ?? https://lnkd.in/gG3UNE56 --- ??: Project team members from NSRI, UNL and the Joint EMS Operations Center (JEC) during kick-off meeting at the Cyber-Physical Networking Lab at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln, Lincoln, Nebraska, October 2024. ?? New publication authored by #NSRIFellow Paul Davis, NSRI Senior Scientist Thomas Schulze and collaborators: Single-Dose Drug Development Candidate for Schistosomiasis. ABSTRACT: Aryl hydantoins were identified in the early 1980s as a promising antischistosomal chemotype. However, as exemplified by Ro 13-3978, this compound series produced antiandrogenic side effects on the host, a not unexpected outcome given their structural similarity to the antiandrogenic drug nilutamide. The two key advances in our optimization of Ro 13-3978 were swapping the aryl trifluoromethyl substituent with a difluoroethyl to abolish antiandrogenic effects and replacing the hydrogen atoms of the?gem-dimethyl substructure with deuterium atoms to increase metabolic stability. Combining these two structural changes led to the discovery of single-dose drug candidate AR102, a compound with potent, selective, and broad-spectrum activity against schistosomes, a long pharmacokinetic half-life in preclinical species, and an acceptable safety profile. --- Access article ?? https://lnkd.in/gjRxss9Q Details about Dr. Davis' lab ?? https://lnkd.in/gNpWuSTs --- #biomedicalresearch #parasitology #drugdevelopment #drugdiscovery #diseases #healthcare #militaryhealth #military
