?? Happy International Day of Happiness! ?? Happiness can sometimes feel like an abstract idea, but science tells us otherwise. Researchers have explored the choices, activities, and mindsets that lead to fulfillment—debunking common myths and uncovering what truly influences well-being. ?? What Makes People Happy? Happiness is a journey, not a destination. It involves curiosity, embracing risk, and balancing momentary pleasure with long-term goals. Strong relationships, resilience in the face of challenges, and the ability to experience all emotions—both positive and negative—are essential. ?? Can We Find Lasting Happiness? Yes! Studies show that simple daily habits, like practicing gratitude, nurturing optimism, investing in relationships, and savoring life’s joys, can create a foundation for lasting happiness. ?? Are People Born Happy? Genetics plays a big role—about 50% of happiness is inherited, 10% comes from life circumstances, and 40% is shaped by personal choices. Even for those predisposed to pessimism, reframing negative thoughts and focusing on growth can make a difference. ?? Happiness Myths & Science Many believe happiness comes from money, success, or avoiding hardship. In reality, true well-being is built on meaningful goals, strong relationships, and a sense of purpose. Positive psychology identifies five key factors: positive emotion, engagement, relationships, meaning, and accomplishment. The key takeaway? Happiness isn’t something we wait for—it’s something we create. ?? What’s one habit you practice for a happier life? ?? Who Gets Recognized in STEM—And Who Feels Recognized? A groundbreaking study is shedding light on how physics students perceive recognition—and the results could shape how we support future scientists. ?? Researchers found that even when women receive just as much peer recognition as men in physics classes, they perceive significantly less. Meanwhile, men report feeling more recognized—even in cases where they receive the same level of peer acknowledgment. ?? Why does this matter? Recognition from teachers and parents is important, but peer recognition plays a major role in making students feel like they belong in physics. As Professor Natasha Holmes from Cornell puts it: "Small interactions can take place that either pull someone in or push someone out." ?? This study—spanning 1,700 students across 8 U.S. institutions—dives deep into the disconnect between received vs. perceived recognition. The findings could be key to closing gender gaps in STEM, ensuring that all students feel valued and encouraged to succeed. ?? As STEM leaders, educators, and peers, we must ask: ?? How can we foster more equitable peer recognition? ?? How do we ensure students internalize positive feedback? ?? What small changes can we make today that might transform the STEM landscape tomorrow? Let's discuss ?? How do you think we can better support the next generation of physicists? #STEM #Physics #DiversityInSTEM #WomenInSTEM #EducationResearch #STEMEducation #WomenInScience #PhysicsCommunity #DiversityInPhysics #EquityInSTEM #STEMLeaders #PeerRecognition #EducationMatters #ResearchInScience #STEMAdvocacy #NSTEM https://ow.ly/E7kX50VhRbU

For national write your story day, we would like to share an amazing story about our chapter in Africa! You are not going to believe this. STEM Center Africa, a member of the National STEM Honor Society, located in rural Kenya, has an incredible story to tell! 90% of the students who come from the surrounding 13 schools have NEVER USED a COMPUTER BEFORE. A number of the schools where the students come from do not have stable electricity or Internet. And yet, of 192 NASA contest program entrants, a team of 7 young women from STEM Center Africa came in FIRST! How does that happen? Founded in 2017, STEM Center Africa educates about 400 students in STEM from grades 3 to 12. University students come to the Center during local holiday periods as well. About 69% of the students are young women. A number of the students speak English in addition to their native language. STEM Center Africa relies on educators which they call collaborators, from the local region as well as from around the world including those from A Step Ahead Silicon Valley, Vulcan Robots and Edsnaps in the United States. When students come to STEM Center Africa, they enter a high tech universe including cutting edge training in Robotics, Arduino, Scratch Coding, Python, Java, Artificial Intelligence, and 3D Design. How can you help? On April 24, 2025 at STEM Center Africa there will be an Olympic Style Induction Ceremony on-site, welcoming approximately 60 student members into the National STEM Honor Society! Each student who has done the work and earned the recognition will be getting a full sized OLYMPIC STYLE MEDAL which will be a timeless symbol of achievement for decades to come. This is an annual bestowed award and students can collect new medals each year! A crowd of over 400 parents, educators, government officials, and sponsors will be at the event! But this is rural Kenya and STEM Center Africa needs all of our support in order to make this happen and to have funds going forward to keep on growing throughout Africa! National STEM Honor Society with STEM Center Africa, has a goal to raise $10,000 by the induction ceremony date of April 24, 2025. To learn more about the STEM Center Africa’s fundraising efforts, check out our fundraising campaign to see how YOU or your business can help! https://lnkd.in/eQvXXTQi #STEMEducation #Kenya #WomenInSTEM #TechForGood #NationalSTEMHonorSociety #STEMCenterAfrica #Robotics #FundraisingForEducation #EmpowerYouth #STEMStories #NSTEM #FundRaising

New Discovery Reveals the True Cause of Mars' Red Hue! Scientists have uncovered the mystery behind Mars' iconic red color, overturning a long-standing theory. Instead of being caused by dry iron oxide (hematite), the red hue is likely due to ferrihydrite, a water-rich iron oxide that forms in cool water. This suggests Mars may have had liquid water on its surface much earlier than we thought, potentially making the planet more hospitable in its ancient past. Using data from multiple missions and lab-created Martian dust, researchers have shown that ferrihydrite, unlike hematite, could only have formed when water was present, offering new insights into Mars' geologic history. This breakthrough could change how we view Mars’ potential for past life and the planet's climate evolution. ???? #Mars #SpaceExploration #ScienceDiscovery #ScienceEducation #MarsDiscovery #MarsResearch #SpaceScience #PlanetaryScience #Astrobiology #MarsExploration #Geology #RedPlanet #SpaceMissions #ScienceNews #NSTEM
