Continuing the discussion of communications intelligence used by the Bureau of Prohibition, the Coast Guard, and other federal agencies to fight organized crime, we meet Elizebeth Friedman. She was hired by the Bureau of Prohibition as a cryptanalyst to work on the backlog of encrypted rumrunner messages accumulated by the Coast Guard Intelligence Division. Elizebeth used her codebreaking skills to eliminate the backlog within two months. Over the course of her career, Mrs. Friedman was repeatedly summoned as an expert witness to testify to the meaning of certain intercepted radio messages, leading to many convictions.
