Today, we are celebrating National Medal of Technology and Innovation Laureate Paul G. Yock, who was awarded for his innovations in interventional cardiology. At?Stanford University,?Yock’s work with?Stanford Biodesign Digital Health?to understand the human heart is applied around the world today to improve patient care and save countless lives. His creation of the Biodesign approach to training future leaders of biotechnology and healthcare ensures his insights and experience will benefit generations to come. Continuing to shine a spotlight on Women’s History Month, today we celebrate Shirley Ann Jackson, the 2014 National Medal of Science recipient, for her efforts in advancing women in STEM. Dr. Jackson is the first African American woman to earn a doctorate in Theoretical Elementary Particle Physics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). She is also the second African American woman in the United States to obtain a doctorate in physics. Her contributions have inspired women to learn and achieve more. #WomensHistoryMonth #WHM #STEM #NMS

On Monday, February 24, Verily hosted a panel featuring 2024 National Medal of Technology and Innovation (NMTI) Laureates Paula T. Hammond and Victor B. Lawrence. The panel discussed their landmark achievements in science and technology, as well as how to respond in the face of barriers. Following the panel, Verily invited inSTEM Scholars from Cal State East Bay for an exclusive tour of their research laboratories and welcomed the Scholars for a networking session with Verily employees. This was an incredible experience for our undergraduate students and we feel extremely fortunate to have been able to collaborate with Verily to organize these opportunities! #STEM #STEMed #NMTI

Join us in congratulating National Medal of Science Laureate John O. Dabiri. Dr. Dabiri received the NMS for his outstanding aeronautical and biological engineering achievements. While researching Caltech Dr. Dabiri connected the movements of fish and jellyfish to engines, leading to different ideas for cleaner energy and locomotion. Dr. Dabiri’s work on biological fluid dynamics, turbulence, and biological propulsion has advanced our clean energy future–leading to more efficient wind turbines and wind farms that make our world cleaner, safer, and more sustainable for future generations. Hello everyone! It has been a while since we have introduced ourselves. We are the National Science Technology and Medals Foundation (NSTMF). Our mission is to build inclusive STEM communities across the United States. We envision a world in which the diversity of American society is reflected in the recipients of all prestigious STEM honors, including future Laureate classes of the National Medal of Science and the National Medal of Technology and Innovation. To make that dream a reality, we must turn our gaze to one of the most vulnerable parts of STEM : an undergraduate’s journey from enrollment to graduation with a STEM degree. The high attrition rate of first-year STEM students, especially those from underrepresented groups, perpetuates a representation problem in collegiate and post-collegiate communities. We believe intervention at this point in a student’s journey is critical. Any young person who dreams of being a scientist or inventor should receive the education, mentoring, and inspiration to help that dream bear fruit. Kicking off Women’s History Month celebrations this week, we have Geraldine L. Richmond! Dr. Richmond was honored in 2013 with the National Medal of Science for her landmark discoveries regarding the molecular characteristics of water surfaces and for her extraordinary efforts in the United States and around the globe to promote women in science. In 1997, she founded COACh, a grassroots organization that has aided over 25,000 women in STEM worldwide. The growth of women in STEM over the past years has been remarkable, and we have Dr. Richmond to thank for encouraging that progress. #WomensHistoryMonth #WHM #STEM #NMS
