The recent issue of the Maine Law Review Journal (Volume 76, Number 2, 2024) focuses on Maine's Constitutional Amendment for the Right to Food. Preceded by a decade of local food and food sovereignty organizing in Maine, the constitutional amendmen - the first of its kind in the nationa -- helped galvanize organizers and advocates across the country to form the National Right to Food Community of Practice. The amendment has not been without its detractors and naysayers, but what is clear is that the Right to Food as a legal framework, organizing strategy and a narrative change tool has entered the discourse on how to end hunger while supporting local food and farm economies. Other states have proposed similar legislation -- including California, Colorado, New York State and West Virginia -- and membership in the National Right to Food Community of Practice is growing. Several NRtF CoP members' articles are features in this journal. Check it out. https://lnkd.in/ew2p8-e6 R. Denisse Córdova Montes Photini Kamvisseli Suarez Alexia Kulwiec Smita Narula

“We hope holding the U.S. accountable on an international stage for human right to food violations will underscore the need for coordinated food and farm policy that is rooted in the experience of small-scale food producers and those with lived experience of hunger in the U.S.,” said Alison Cohen, the National Right to Food Community of Practice Director and General Coordinator.?“In the meantime, the National Right to Food Community of Practice and partners will continue advocating for the implementation of a human rights framework at the local, state, and national levels when addressing issues in the food system.” https://lnkd.in/ere3vXb4 R.
