'Global Recycling Day' was created in 2018 by Global Recycling Foundation (GRF) to help recognize and celebrate, the importance, recycling plays in preserving our precious primary resources and securing the future of our planet. It is a day for the world to come together and put the planet first. Recycling is a key part of the Circular Economy, helping us protect our natural resources. Each year the ‘Seventh Resource’ (Recyclables) saves over 700 million tonnes in CO2 emissions which is projected to increase to 1 billion tons by 2030. Therefore, recycling is on the frontline in the war to save the future of our planet and humanity while supporting the global green agenda. The GRF has announced the theme of Global Recycling Day 2025 as #RecyclingHeroes. This will recognize the people, places and activities that showcase what an important role recycling plays in contributing to an environmentally stable planet and a greener future which will benefit all. Today is a reminder to rethink, repurpose, and rebuild a world that values sustainability! ??? #GlobalRecyclingDay2025 #RecyclingForAll #RecyclingHeroes #Sustainability #CircularEconomy #RecycleForFuture #GoGreen #EcoFriendly #ClimateAction #SaveOurPlanet #ReduceReuseRecycle #SustainableFuture #ActNow #ProtectNature #WasteManagement #EcoAwareness #GreenPlanet #ResponsibleLiving #RecyclingSolutions #EnvironmentMatters #Productivity4ViksitBharat National Productivity Council (NPC) India Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India Asian Productivity Organization Piyush Goyal Sanjiv Singh Global Recycling Day

This guide earlier authored by N. V. Krishna, then Regional Director, Bangalore & later revised by Ajit Singh, then Director, Management Services, National Productivity Council, explores the role of incentives in motivating employees & enhancing productivity. It discusses different incentive schemes, guiding principles for their design, & their impact on industrial performance. Key Topics Covered: ?? The Philosophy of Incentives Incentives are crucial in improving employee performance & organizational efficiency. Motivation stems from internal needs, & incentives help fulfill those needs. Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs is applied to understand motivation, ranging from physiological needs to self-actualization. ?? Types of Incentives Financial : Wages, salaries, bonuses, profit-sharing, & performance-based payments. Semi-Financial : Subsidized meals, social benefits, paid holidays, and pension schemes. Non-Financial : Recognition, good working conditions, job enrichment, and team motivation. ?? Incentives & Productivity Wage incentives play a vital role in increasing industrial productivity. Linking wages to performance ensures optimal use of manpower. Surveys indicate productivity growth following the introduction of incentive schemes. ?? Common Issues with Incentives Poorly designed incentive plans deteriorate over time. Ineffective management & lack of grievance handling reduce incentive effectiveness. Transparent communication & fair policies are essential for sustaining incentive plans. ?? Designing Effective Incentive Schemes Technical Soundness: Incentives must be based on reliable performance measurement. Guaranteed Standards: Workers must trust that performance targets won’t be arbitrarily changed. Balanced Pay Relationship: Ensuring incentive earnings align with supervisors’ and managers’ pay. Sustainability: The scheme should support long-term organizational growth. ?? Types of Incentive Plans Individual Incentives: Direct rewards for personal performance (e.g., piece-rate systems, bonus payments). Group Incentives: Rewards based on team performance to encourage cooperation. Plant-Wide Incentives: Linking incentives to overall company productivity & cost efficiency. ?? Implementation & Review Communication with employees & unions is key to acceptance. Periodic reviews ensure incentives remain fair and effective. Proper supervision, grievance handling, & transparent administration sustain motivation. Conclusion A well-structured incentive system improves productivity, employee morale, & company performance. However, incentives should complement—not replace—good management practices. Successful implementation requires technical accuracy, fairness, and continuous monitoring to maintain effectiveness. Applying Lean and Problem-Solving Tools for Energy Efficiency Improvements (Steam System - Case Exercise) For reducing wastes and improving efficiencies lean techniques are widely adopted and MSMEs are being encouraged to adopt to improve their productivity & competitiveness (www.lean.msme.gov.in). Numerous cases exist to demonstrate working efficiency in terms of time and methods not many can be seen with respect to application for improving energy efficiency. ·???????? This case exercise is an effort to align application of lean tools to improve energy efficiency since: 1)Energy efficiency benchmark data is more easily available to provide an indicator of potential benefits to get an early buy-in. 2)Most improvements inter-alia result in other benefits pertaining to resources, quality and other aspects. Request to lean-in with your feedback and comments with a view to develop similar cases for general utilities and specific industrial sectors providing one more approach for capacity building and catalysing the adoption of these tools and synergizing skills of lean and energy specialists.
