National Press Club Journalism Institute

More than?70 million?people are?living with a disability?in the U.S. yet?remain underrepresented in journalism?produced by national newsrooms. Katy Neas, chief executive of The Arc of the United States, shares advice on the types of stories that elevate the voices of this underrepresented community.?

The Institute is honoring Yvette Cabrera, senior reporter at the Center for Public Integrity and a dedicated environmental justice journalist, with the 2024 Neil and Susan Sheehan Award for Investigative Journalism. Throughout her career, Cabrera has reported at the intersection of justice and equity, examining the impact of systemic disparities, such as environmental pollution and contamination, on marginalized communities throughout the U.S. “Yvette’s work exemplifies the commitment of the Sheehan family to promote the practice of investigative journalism exemplifying compassion, courage, and integrity,” said NPCJI president Gil Klein. Her commitment to journalism extends to building community and opportunity among her peers. She is the immediate past president of the NAHJ (National Association of Hispanic Journalists); a founding member of The Uproot Project; and board member of CCNMA Latino Journalists of California.

The National Press Club is honoring Mississippi Today with its highest honor for press freedom, the John Aubuchon Press Freedom Award. Mississippi Today, a nonprofit, non-partisan newsroom, is currently involved in a legal case to protect privileged documents used in producing a Pulitzer Prize-winning investigation and named in an ensuing defamation case brought by the state’s former governor. By selecting them as the domestic honoree, the Club & the Institute are committing to monitor and support this precedent-setting case for the First Amendment protection of reporters’ privilege. “Mississippi Today’s reporting shined light on a critical issue impacting thousands of Americans, and we hope this award both honors their work and draws attention and support for their case,” said NPC president Emily Wilkins. The Club will confer the 2024 Aubuchon awards during its annual Fourth Estate Award Gala honoring?Axios’ Jim VandeHei and Mike Allen?on Nov. 21.

Friday: Join us with Common Health Coalition for insights from leading public health experts on success stories in closing the gap in public health and care systems. Journalists play a large part in sharing those stories and exploring the barriers. This conversation will highlight research on high-impact public health and care delivery system partnerships while addressing the core components of their success. Expect a robust discussion on practical aspects of these important collaborations.
