Each year, the National Organization for Victim Advocacy (NOVA) Board of Directors presents awards to recognize the extraordinary accomplishments of individuals and programs in the victims’ movement. Award nominations are open for the following categories: - The Morton Bard Award recognizes the contributions of an individual in an “allied” profession such as law enforcement, prosecution, medicine, mental health, the clergy, etc. - The Tadini Bacigalupi Jr. Award is given to a distinguished victim service program. - The Marlene Young Leadership Award recognizes outstanding contributions to the victims’ movement by a program manager, state administrator, or related professional. - The Margery Fry Award recognizes outstanding service as a victim assistance practitioner. - The Edith Surgan Victim Activist Award is given to victims or survivors who demonstrate a life of commitment after their victimization to promote rights and services that help change the lives of victims. - The Exceptional Military Victim Advocate Award recognizes outstanding contributions by a military victim advocate (active duty, civilian, or contractor) to service members and dependents (NOVA staff will select the award). NOVA’s Corporate Team Training program wrapped up a great custom training with the fun, dedicated and passionate staff of Royal Caribbean Group! We learned a lot about the great work they are doing shipboard and shoreside, and enjoyed helping them to expand their knowledge in trauma-informed responses across their roles. Already looking forward to the next training!

National Victim Rights Advocate | Member, U.S. Congressional Crime Survivors and Justice Caucus Advisory Committee | Governor's Courage Award
I am grateful to share that I have been appointed to the Public Policy Advisory Committee of the National Organization for Victim Advocacy NOVA. NOVA is committed to advocating for victims’ rights and supportive public policies for victims of crime and violence. Here is my ask: NOVA, in partnership with other national groups, is planning a virtual observation of NOVA’s 40th?Anniversary.?The purpose of this day will be to both celebrate all that VOCA has accomplished over the past 40 years AND look ahead to ensure that VOCA continues to be funded and reach all survivors (including a call to action for the VOCA Stabilization Act). NOVA is looking for advocates and survivors to share (in 40 words or less) what VOCA means to them, to survivors, and to our field. Please include your name, agency/organization, city/state; or for survivors, however they want to self-identify. Also, photos are great if folks are comfortable including them. NOVA will highlight a few of these stories/photos on their webpage and others will appear on social media. Please send any #VOCA40 testimonials by this?Friday, Sept. 27 to the following email: [email protected] Thank you to Claire Ponder Selib, Mariel Branagan Jewell, M.A., and Callie Stewart, LMSW for all your hard work on this wonderful initiative. Following publication of the 1982 President’s Task Force on Victims of Crime, NOVA collaborated with the U.S. Justice Department and Congressional sponsors to draft and secure enactment of the federal Victim of Crime Act (VOCA) and the creation of the non-taxpayer funded Crime Victims’ Fund upon which thousands of victim assistance and compensation programs depend for financial support.

Now more than ever, NOVA is committed to shaping a more accessible, equitable and inclusive future for the victim assistance movement and our future leaders. We continue to believe in and fight for change and innovation in the field of victim services. To that end, we are raising funds to provide 50 need-based Training Scholarships to 50 advocates so they may begin or enhance their victim assistance careers. Our aim with this groundbreaking scholarship initiative is clear: to pave new avenues for aspiring victim assistance professionals and survivor-advocates by dismantling the financial barriers that impede access to skill-based training. We believe this investment in our future leaders will sow the seeds for a more accessible, equitable, and inclusive victim advocacy movement. But we cannot do it alone. Help us make this initiative possible by making a gift to the #NOVA50FOR50 campaign at https://hubs.la/Q02X_TSX0 and tracking our progress. Your gift of $5, $10, or $50 makes a lasting impact. Thank you. #50FutureAdvocates #NOVA50FOR50

Today marks the 20th Anniversary of the Crime Victims’ Rights Act which provides critical rights to victims of crime seeking justice in the legal system. NOVA is grateful to the advocates and survivors before us that made this legislation possible and will continue to fight for the expansion of crime victims’ rights and their access to legal services across the country.
