At our Iwo Jima Commemoration this February, we had the profound honor of witnessing a historic moment: speaker Steve McCloud brought together the descendants of the heroes captured in one of WWII’s most iconic photographs. On stage, for the very first time, Jane Kendeigh’s granddaughter and Bill Wyckoff’s son met—united by legacy, memory, and shared history. To see more moments like this from our weekend of Iwo Jima events, visit the Iwo Jima Commemoration page on our website or head to our YouTube channel. https://lnkd.in/g3FYAhKZ #WWIIHistory #IwoJima #Commemoration #VeteranStories #MilitaryHistory #SharedHistory

关于我们
The Admiral Nimitz Foundation was established in 1971 to provide funding for the Fleet Admiral Chester W. Nimitz Naval Museum, a museum honoring Fredericksburg’s native son and Commander-in-Chief of Allied Forces, Pacific Ocean Area. Since then, the Foundation’s efforts have built a well-established and respected institution, now called the National Museum of the Pacific War which annually welcomes over 120,000 visitors, including about 15,000 students on field trips and reaches out to thousands more virtually. The National Museum of the Pacific War is a dynamic, world-class experience designed for visitors of all ages and backgrounds. It is the only institution in the continental United States dedicated exclusively to telling the stories of the courageous men and women who served in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater of World War II, as well as those who supported on the home front. “…this is perhaps the most comprehensive, well-organized and informative military museum I've ever seen. A museum of this quality—and importance—needs to be seen…” — Mark Yost, Wall Street Journal Located on a six-acre site, the Museum includes the George Bush Gallery, Admiral Nimitz Gallery, Pacific Combat Zone, Plaza of Presidents, Memorial Courtyard, and the Japanese Garden of Peace.

As part of our #80thMiniSeries honoring the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II, we’re featuring a special guest speaker, Shawn Price, a proud member of the Navajo Nation. In this video, Price highlights the vital role the Navajo code talkers played during WWII. Exactly 80 years ago today, on March 25, 1945, they made a significant contribution to the capture of Iwo Jima. Major Howard Connor, 5th Marine Division signal officer, later stated, "Were it not for the Navajos, the Marines would never have taken Iwo Jima." #WWII #NavajoCodeTalkers #HistoryMatters #MilitaryHistory #IwoJima #NavajoNation #VeteranStories #HonoringHeroes

On this day eighty years ago, 26 March 1945, the island of Iwo Jima is declared secured by American forces. American planners believed Iwo Jima could be taken in just a week with relative ease and planned to move quickly from Iwo Jima to Okinawa. The struggle for the island lasted well over a month, and was the only battle of the Pacific War where American casualties outnumbered that of the Japanese. The Americans suffered more than 26,000 casualties, including almost 7,000 dead, making it the bloodiest battle in Marine Corps history to date. The capture of Iwo Jima was a steppingstone to the end of the war, aiding in the invasion of Okinawa. After the massive casualties on Iwo Jima and Okinawa, President Truman reevaluated the plans for the invasion of Japan and decided instead to use the new atomic bombs, hastening the end of World War II. ??? The Medal of Honor is the United States' highest military award for valor in combat — presented to those who go above and beyond the call of duty, often at the cost of their lives. To date, more than 3,500 Medals of Honor have been awarded across all branches of the military, each with its own unique design. At the National Museum of the Pacific War, our Medal of Honor exhibit in the George H.W. Bush Gallery shares the stories of WWII recipients who served in the Pacific Theater. On display is the Medal of Honor awarded posthumously to Marine Staff Sergeant William J. Bordelon for his extraordinary actions on November 20, 1943. In honor of Women's History Month, this week's #DigitalDiscoveryDay highlights the Donna Davey Collection, available on the Portal to Texas History! Donna Davey was a United States Army Air Forces flight nurse during World War II. On this day in history, 24 March 1942, Civilian Exclusion Order No. 1 is issued to force the removal of Japanese American families from Bainbridge Island, Washington. This exclusion order utilized the power given by Executive Order 9066 to exclude certain people or groups from designated zones. There were 108 exclusion orders issued from March to August 1942, mandating the removal of “all persons of Japanese ancestry, including aliens and non-aliens” from specially-designated areas in Washington, Oregon, California, and even Arizona. These persons often had less than a week to dispose of their possessions and were only able to take what they could carry with them to the incarceration camps which would become their homes. The exclusion of Japanese-Americans and their families from the West Coast was complete by the end of August, and most of them were detained in the camps until after the end of the war. On this day in history, 23 March 1882, the Office of Naval Intelligence (ONI) is established. ONI played a vital role during World War II, obtaining information on enemy technology, tactics, and operations for use by the Combat Intelligence Division. They also produced ship and aircraft recognition manuals for American troops to recognize enemy vessels, created 3D maps for mission planning, and trained hundreds of Intelligence officers for commanders in the war. In 2009, ONI was restructured and expanded to fit the nation’s growing needs. Today, it continues to support informational warfare capabilities to secure and protect the United States through its maritime intelligence. Must experience to believe this incredible story.
We were honored to have Berna Real's daughter, Janice, and her partner, Jimmy, join us for last week's Grand Opening of our new immersive experience, The Rescue. The Rescue takes place in 1944 and tells the harrowing true story of a then 7-year-old Berna Real, a child refugee from the Philippine island of Negros, who was rescued by the USS Crevalle, a Balao-class submarine. Sadly, Berna passed away last year before she could see the completion of The Rescue. However, we were fortunate to have collected her oral history, which will soon be available for viewing on the Portal to Texas History. Visit our website to learn more about The Rescue and purchase tickets. https://lnkd.in/g6g_RjhF #OralHistory #USSCrevalle #HistoryMatters #GrandOpening #Museum #HistoryMuseum #WWII
