Congratulations to Marine Forces Special Operations Command (MARSOC) on the anniversary of its creation in 2006. The Marines who served in OSS were among its most legendary figures: Col. The OSS Society's award-winning short documentary, "Filming Under Fire: John Ford's OSS Field Photo Branch," is an official selection of the GI Film Festival. Our film tells the story of Hollywood director John Ford's heroic World War II service as commander of the OSS Field Photographic Branch alongside many of Hollywood's leading filmmakers. After watching our film, Steven Spielberg thanked The OSS Society for "preserving this history and keeping it our conversations 80 years later." We couldn't ask for a greater endorsement of our film or our nonprofit's mission to preserve the OSS's legacy, educate the American public about the importance of strategic intelligence and special operations to the preservation of freedom, and honor Americans who have served at the "tip of the spear" as our nation's first line of defense. The OSS Congressional Gold Medal Act became Public Law 114-269 OTD 2016. An official of the US Mint said it is the most beautiful medal in the Mint’s history.

The OSS veteran and “French Chef” Julia Child was born OTD 1915. China. Betty McIntosh, her friend and OSS colleague, wrote: “In March 1945, Julia and I both received orders to report to Kunming, China, to OSS Detachment 404. On March 15, 1945, we flew the ‘Hump’ together from India to China. The plane, an unpressurized C-54, was stormed-tossed for three hours over the 15,000-foot Himalayan peaks, sucked up and down hundreds of feet by air currents, flying through lightning and thunder, and engulfed in heavy clouds. There were occasional views of the snowfields far below where planes that hadn’t made it were etched like crosses in the whiteness. Most of us were basket cases except Julia, who calmly read a book during the flight.”

The Norwegian Special Operations Group (NORSO) was activated OTD 1943. Its mission to Norway - RYPE - is inscribed on the OSS Congressional Gold Medal. https://lnkd.in/eD_DU-s2
