Hands-on interactive experiences are one of our favorite ways to learn at the River Museum, whether you’re planning a school field trip or an afternoon visit with your family! Thank you to the Eleanor Roosevelt Middle School FIRST Robotics Teams Robo Raptors and Royal Robots for sharing their passion for STEM and the ways it can improve the ecosystems of our watersheds! Over the weekend, students brought their robots for public demonstrations and led engaging activities in the Makerspace.

Today is International Day of Zoo and Aquarium Educators and we have to brag about our amazing educators, especially published author, Jacob Loeffelholz! Jacob has been studying water bears (aka Tardigrades) as part of his master's dissertation, and is a published author on these microscopic phenomena. Water bears are known for their ability to survive extreme conditions. About 0.5 mm long when fully grown, they are short and plump, with four pairs of legs, each ending in claws or suction disks. To learn more about these tiny survivalists, you can purchase his book on Amazon, and you can visit Jacob's website to learn more about his work! We love seeing people follow their passions. Congratulations, Jacob! Check out his book, "Tardigrades in a New Light" on Amazon!

A bird’s eye view is not always what we think. Since birds cannot see glass the way we do, they do not treat it as a barrier to avoid. Instead, they can be attracted closer to the reflections in glass that show what could appear to be elements of their natural habitat, such as plants and open sky. Window collisions are one of the leading causes of death or injury for our native songbirds. Today, the River Museum is installing small white stickers to our windows to make them more visible to the songbird in our area. You can help at home by closing your blinds or adding decals to your windows. These small changes can really help our feathered friends!
