For the WCW blog, Research Associate Patricia McGuiness-Carmichael wrote about National Institute on Out-of-School Time (NIOST)'s 2019 - 2023 work to create and sustain literacy-rich environments (LRE). In collaboration with OST programs such as the William Penn Foundation-funded Philadelphia Out-of-School Time Literacy and Quality Improvement Initiative, these programs embedded literacy into everyday practices so children in kindergarten through third grade could engage with literacy activities in a new way.
