The second year of UNLV's Tech Ready Rebels program kicked off earlier this month with an orientation at the College of Engineering. The yearlong program gives Nevada high school students the opportunity to learn skills in information technology, computer science, and cybersecurity. Students will earn college credits, network with industry professionals, earn internships and gain real-world work experience in the fields of IT and computer science. A UNLV program that connects Nevada students to careers in information technology has received a new round of funding to support a second cohort of students. Tech Ready Rebels is a yearlong program that gives Nevada high school juniors and seniors an opportunity to develop skills in information technology, computer science, and cybersecurity. MGM Resorts International recently donated $120,000 towards the program’s operations for a second year. As one of the 2024-2025 NIAE grant awardees, Erin Smith, Ph.D., an assistant professor of mathematics education in the UNLV College of Education Department of Teaching and Learning, will study how to enhance math writing instruction for students. “Teacher feedback on any kind of school-based intervention is a critical step in just understanding the feasibility,” she said. “It’s been a long time since the three of us on this project and our graduate assistant have been in the classroom…that’s different from being in a classroom with kids and understanding the realities and demands of the classroom.” Read more about Dr. Smith's work and the work of our other grant winners here: https://lnkd.in/geHG3tcg
