关于我们
The National Indian Education Association (NIEA), founded in 1969, is the most inclusive Native organization in the country representing Native students, educators, families, communities, and tribes. NIEA's goal is to expand access to equal educational opportunities for every Native student regardless of their location or background. This goal is accomplished through focusing on helping tribes and communities develop capacity to administer excellent education programs for Native students by promoting culturally based education models that allow future generations to strengthen languages and preserve the traditions of their tribes and communities. NIEA's mission is to advance comprehensive educational opportunities for American Indians, Alaska Natives, and Native Hawaiians throughout the United States.

?? NIEA Calls for Tribal Consultation on Executive Order Restructuring the U.S. Department of Education Today, the National Indian Education Association (NIEA) submitted a formal letter to U.S. Secretary of Education Linda McMahon, urging immediate, government-to-government consultation with Tribal Nations on the implementation of Executive Order 14242: "Improving Education Outcomes by Empowering Parents, States, and Communities." The letter outlines serious concerns about the potential impact of the Executive Order on Native students, Tribal Nations, and Native-serving institutions. NIEA stresses that any changes to the structure or responsibilities of the U.S. Department of Education must honor the federal government’s trust and treaty obligations to Native peoples. “The federal government has a legal and moral obligation to fulfill its trust responsibilities to Native students and Tribal Nations,†said Executive Director Jason Dropik. “Formal consultation is not optional—it is a necessary step to ensure Native voices are included in shaping the future of education.†?? NIEA is thrilled to partner with Camp Fire and Native Americans in Philanthropy in addressing cultural appropriation in youth outdoor programs. Our collaboration is about more than just correcting past wrongs—it’s about creating a future where Native youth can proudly embrace their culture and feel supported in their growth. Recently, SSRI published our partnership story through an article that dives deep into our approach, which focuses on promoting cultural respect, healing, and meaningful change in how Native youth are represented and treated in educational spaces. Our work together aims to empower Native youth to be leaders and advocates while ensuring their cultural identity is celebrated—not appropriated. We’re committed to supporting the whole child—emotionally, mentally, socially, and physically—and this partnership is a testament to our shared vision for a more inclusive and respectful world for Native youth.
