Energy influencer Adam Ratliff, also known as, "The Armchair Engineer," spoke to NHA members at a webinar this week about how communicators can better tell the story of #hydro to critical audiences and stakeholders online. Some highlights: 1) We MUST tell our own story before others do it for us. 2) A testimonial is one of the best ways to share hydro's benefits. 3) Your story doesn't need to be perfect. It just has to exist in the marketplace of ideas. Thanks to Adam and fellow guest, Malik Reid of Constellation, for sharing their expertise on social media engagement. During #BlackHistoryMonth, NHA is highlighting Black Americans who are making impactful and lasting contributions to water power. Today, we're honoring Daniella Piper, PE of New York Power Authority (NYPA), who serves as the public power producer's Executive Vice President and Chief Innovation Officer. Growing up in Trinidad as the daughter of an electrician, she developed an interest in energy at a young age that led her to a remarkable career. She has helped NYPA grow and provide more reliable power to its customers, serving as the first woman to head the Niagara Power Project, which is the largest electricity producer in New York State, and leading NYPA's Enterprise Innovation Team, which serves as an incubator for new technologies and digital solutions. Along the way, she has also worked hard to expand opportunities in the field for other women of color and help NYPA increase #STEM outreach and scholarship opportunities to underrepresented groups.?

Pumped storage hydropower is the world’s most proven energy storage solution, yet the U.S. has largely stalled on new development for decades. Rye Development is helping change that with the Lewis Ridge Pumped Storage Project, a 287 MW facility, which is repurposing former Kentucky mine land into a cutting-edge energy storage site. Selected for $81 million in U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) funding, Lewis Ridge will store electricity for up to eight hours—enough to power 67,000 homes—while creating 1,500 construction jobs and boosting local economies. By revitalizing former mining sites, Lewis Ridge demonstrates how the U.S. can strengthen grid reliability, drive economic growth, and build a more resilient energy system. Check out this week's POWERHOUSE, which features a Q&A with Rye Development's Erik Steimle, CEP, Chief Development Officer, about the Lewis Ridge Pumped Storage Project. Calling all communicators! This Thursday, February 27th at 1pm EST/10am PST, NHA's Public Affairs Commitee will be hosting a free webinar that will teach you how to tap into the world of influencer marketing to tell the story of water power. Why? Because that's where the audience is! About 37% of adults under age 30 say they regularly get news from influencers on social media. Our guest speakers are #hydro influencer Adam Ratliff, also known as "The Armchair Engineer," and online marketing expert, Malik Reid, of Constellation. They will share their experiences and insights to help your organization partner with the right voices and broaden your message to new audiences. This event is open to the public and will be held virtually via Microsoft Teams. If you are interested in attending but have not received the invite, please contact [email protected].

If you're curious to learn more about American #hydropower history, then look no further than California's Folsom Powerhouse State Historic Park! Located 22 miles from its substation in Sacramento, the Folsom Powerhouse is nestled along the beautiful shores of Lake Natoma. The facility, which generated electricity from 1895 - 1952, was donated by Pacific Gas and Electric Company in 1958. Preserved for the purpose of historic education, visitors are transported back in time to learn about how the earliest #hydro facilities operated, as well as the role of the Folsom Powerhouse in serving as a testbed for electrification in the modern era. The Business Council for Sustainable Energy (BCSE) has released its #2025Factbook, which details the state of the energy landscape in America. A top takeaway: In 2024, US power generation reached its highest level in 2 decades, increasing 3.3% year on year. While this is great news, it also means that it's increasingly vital we preserve and grow #waterpower to meet the increasing demand and changing energy landscape. NHA is a proud sponsor of the factbook, and we'll continue to use this resource as a guide for our industry. We hope you do, too. Read the full report here: https://lnkd.in/e_cc5JSq

#Hydropower is often referred to as an engineering marvel, and it's no wonder why. ? #Hydro projects - big and small - are designed to meet geographical, ecological, hydrological, and environmental specifications, rendering each unique in the way it generates electricity. ? In celebration of National Engineers Week, NHA recognizes the incredible work of our nation's engineers, who help ensure water power's ability to provide reliable and secure electricity across the country. ? It's also important to cheer on the students from around the world who select the United States as the starting point for their engineering journey, as their passion both drives innovation and supports the future workforce. ? #WaterPower is stronger because of the many engineers who call this industry home! #NationalEngineersWeek
