Dear Mr. Blake Koehler, On behalf of the National Health Foundation, We would like to extend our sincere gratitude for your thoughtful shoutout and recognition of the work we do for the community. Your acknowledgment means so much to us and further fuels our commitment to improving the lives of those who need it most. It is heartening to know that our efforts are making a meaningful impact. Together we can continue to do the work.
Continuing my series on organizations doing incredible work, today I want to highlight the National Health Foundation (NHF!). NHF is focused on breaking down the barriers that keep people from being healthy—things like lack of stable housing, food insecurity, and limited access to healthcare. One of the ways they do this is through recuperative care, which provides a safe, supportive place for people to heal after being discharged from the hospital. Without it, many folks experiencing homelessness end up recovering on the streets or bouncing back into the ER, making it nearly impossible to get better. I’ve had the chance to visit their facilities, and I was genuinely impressed by the care and thought they’ve put into making sure people are taken care of in a way that is both cost-effective and deeply human. Recuperative care is cheaper than extended hospital stays, but NHF doesn’t just focus on the numbers—they make sure their spaces reflect how each of us would want to be treated if we were in that situation. It’s the kind of work that’s both smart and compassionate—a rare but powerful combination. Since 2018, NHF has provided over 85,000 nights of safe shelter for people recovering from serious health conditions. They also work directly with communities to connect families to food benefits, improve local health resources, and create long-term solutions for better well-being. What really stands out about NHF is their focus on real, lasting change. They’re not just treating symptoms—they’re tackling the root causes of poor health and working alongside communities to make a real difference.
