This Women's History Month, NFWL is excited to continue highlighting statues and portraits of female trailblazers that are on display at state capitol buildings across the country! This week, we're featuring the portrait of Viola Ross Napier at the Georgia State Capitol! Viola Ross Napier was one of the first two women to serve in the Georgia House of Representatives. She and her colleague Bessie Kempton were elected in 1922, just 2 years after the passage of the 19th Amendment. Prior to her service in the legislature, Napier was a lawyer who ran her own practice and was the first woman to argue a case before the Supreme Court of Georgia. She served in the Georgia House of Representatives from 1923 to 1926, during which time she championed the rights of children and the disabled. Her portrait was painted by Nancy Honea in 1989.
