This month brings a wealth of inspiring stories that showcase agriculture’s rich heritage and the excitement of hands-on learning. Take, for example, the recent Flywheelers Antique Gas and Steam Engine Tractor Show, hosted by the Anderson County Flywheelers in Garnett, Kan. From FFA member to Nebraska state senator and decorated Army colonel, Tom Brewer’s journey is marked by resilience and service. Growing up near the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, Brewer gained essential skills through FFA, earning his State and American FFA Degrees and becoming Nebraska’s first Native American state FFA officer in 1977. After six military tours in Afghanistan and receiving two Purple Hearts, Brewer turned his dedication to veterans and public service. Elected to the Nebraska Legislature in 2016, he has also been active in humanitarian efforts in Ukraine. This year, Brewer was honored with the Chief Standing Bear Prize for Courage, celebrating his life’s commitment to courage and service.
