Since its founding in 41 years ago, the National Endowment for Democracy has advanced President Ronald Reagan's vision, as stated in his Westminster Address: “We must be staunch in our conviction that freedom is not the sole prerogative of a lucky few, but the inalienable and universal right of all human beings. The objective I propose is quite simple to state: to foster the infrastructure of democracy–the system of a free press, unions, political parties, universities–which allows a people to choose their own way, to develop their own culture, to reconcile their own differences through peaceful means.”? https://lnkd.in/eQ7x_znz

The Center for International Media Assistance's Senior Director Nicholas Benequista, Ph.D. explains how the UN Cybercrime Convention will enable authoritarian actors to threaten independent media and stifle dissent: “Critics argue that the vagueness of the treaty’s language, along with its deference to national laws — even laws that conflict with international human rights standards — creates a new vector for transnational repression, the growing practice of authoritarian states targeting their critics overseas.” Read more in The Hill: https://lnkd.in/ekyuY7wy
