The recent fires in Los Angeles have left many families struggling to find stability in the midst of chaos. In response The National Emergency Child Care Network and the LA Volunteers stepped up to provide critical support, offering 101 hours of free child care over 9 days, directly assisting 2 families in need. With 12 dedicated volunteers deployed within just 7 days, their swift action made a tangible difference. Additionally, 10 volunteers underwent training, ensuring they were prepared to offer compassionate and reliable care in the future. Their efforts highlight the power of community-driven support in times of crisis.

EMERGENCY CHILD CARE IN CRISIS
关于我们
National Emergency Child Care Network is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit founded in 2024. Our goal is to ensure families have equal opportunity to access and utilize free emergency child care during a crisis. Together with our partners, we keep children safe and cared for while the family finds a way to manage the crisis situation. In result, we reduce high levels of stress for the family, as well as the potential for violence, abuse or neglect to the child during a crisis. Learn more here: www.emergencychildcare.org/. Please sign up to volunteer as an emergency child care provider when a disaster strikes. Our children need you! https://emergencychildcare.org/contact-2/

A wonderful post from one of our LA volunteers...
Hi there LinkedIn! As some of you probably know, a lot of my professional background is kid related and even though I now work in media production and continue to move steadily towards my dream of developing scripted TV series, I still love doing kid stuff. When I was looking for ways to help my community after the recent fires in Los Angeles, I came across National Emergency Child Care Network, a non-profit organization run by Silke Knebel out of Durham, North Carolina which now operates in the Los Angeles area as well. This organization offers childcare FREE OF CHARGE to families experiencing crisis. The crisis does not need to be as large-scale as the entire neighborhood burning down. Health, legal, or job related emergencies happen to so many of us who may not have the time, connections, know-how, or resources to quickly find and pay for safe, convenient childcare. National Emergency Child Care Network is always looking for funding and volunteers; however, with this post, I am specifically asking those of you who work with under-resourced communities in the Los Angeles area to help me find the parents who may need this service. Volunteers have been trained, given background checks, and are ready to help. Please feel encouraged to share this post and reach out if you have any questions. Rose https://lnkd.in/g7sZ2kSR

YES! There is ALWAYS a way to help! Thank you, Suzzel!
Arizona State University Graduate | Jose Ronstadt Outstanding Undergraduate Student Award Recipient | ASU Chapter President of National Society of Collegiate Scholars | Millennium Fellow & Campus Director '22.
There is ALWAYS a way to help In moments of crisis donation centers fill with volunteers and essentials, but what of those in need after the news stops showing the crisis. Getting back to every day life doesn’t happen overnight. Basic needs are still needed; financial hardships, loss of all possessions. An overlooked aspect in moments of crisis is child care. Parents need to go back to work while child care centers are being rebuilt. Some parents can no longer afford child care due to their losses. A year ago, the incredible Silke Knebel founded the National Emergency Child Care Network. A volunteer based child care service for families while finding a way to manage the crisis situation. ?? Find out how you can help! Volunteer today! ?? https://lnkd.in/gTQvAmMZ

Not even a year old yet, and 658 hours and 71 days of free child care across 2 states!!
We really did it!! The volume of volunteers in Los Angeles signing up has been beyond our expectations. 250+ registrations. We onboarded, trained and vetted 50 Los Angeles volunteers since Jan 10. We have now deployed 15 amazing trauma-informed volunteers to help (2) displaced families in LA due to the fires. These volunteers have generously provided 120 hours and 12 days of FREE child care so these families have support, respite and relief. 10 incredible volunteers in LA have provided "above and beyond" care, comfort, and joy to 2-year-old Sophie, bringing toys, art supplies, books, and so much love. Sophie's Altadena child care burned down in the fires. Her family was evacuated from their Pasadena home and had to live in a small hotel room for 2 weeks. (See photos). 5 volunteers have spent 6 days with a family whose house completely burned down in Altadena, CA. Everything they owned is gone including all of 11-month-old baby Nik's toys, photos, clothes and favorite blankets. The family is now displaced and renting an Airbnb in Inglewood. The parents are beyond grateful to have relief from us so they can work, get respite from the overwhelming stress and trauma of the disaster, and figure things out. (See photos). My heart is full with gratitude not only for the families who trust us to care for their children, but to our courageous volunteers who give their days to help others in need -- volunteers who have been impacted by the fires themselves. We recruit and train only local volunteers to help local families, so volunteers can truly understand the trauma, pain and overwhelming stress our families are going through. And remember, we only just started National Emergency Child Care Network 8 months ago! This was just a vision less than a year ago, and in just the last 4.5 months, we have responded to 2 of the most destructive disasters in American history. We have provided 658 hours and 71 days of free emergency child care across NC and CA. We have trained and vetted 100 Emergency Child Care Volunteers across two states ready for active deployments. And 48 families have trusted us to provide FREE trauma-informed child care to their families... including, 80 children (mostly 0-8 years). Many of these children are suffering from PTSD from the trauma of these disasters. Please celebrate with us! This is incredible impact. But more importantly, we have only scratched the surface, there are 1000's of families impacted every day from disasters, natural or man-made. We are only in 2 states. And up until 4 days ago, we were 100% volunteer run, no paid staff. There is so much more need, desperate cries for help from families (mostly moms) impacted by these disasters. I get calls weekly from families across the US in crisis and needing immediate free child care. Come join us and be part of something incredible.

YES...is my answer after numerous requests have come in for our help in LA. From companies calling us, to partner organizations and individual families, we are responding to LA's fires at maximum capacity. We have just processed 150 emergency child care volunteer registrations in the last 48 hours. We have 1-2 trainings per day for the next 2 weeks. We are gearing up for mass deployments across LA to help children and families displaced due to the fires. We will deploy volunteers to disaster shelters, to pop-up child cares, to individual families who need help, and all of the above. Thank you everyone for championing our work and mission. It's heartbreaking to see the devastation in LA, and heart-warming to hear all the incredible messages pouring in about our work to help those impacted. YES, we will help you. We will not leave you behind. :-)

What a weekend! I took the kiddos on a road trip to Asheville (4 hours from Durham). Of course, none of us got any sleep. But it was a weekend to remember...keep reading! I was able to meet with a few families we have helped with emergency child care and I brought our tote bags filled with toys to our child care volunteers in Asheville. Look at the photos! We also celebrated the holiday giving spirit with over 500 families impacted by the recent Helene disaster at our "Families Together Holiday Celebration" event that we co-hosted with two local partners in Asheville including Asheville City Schools and Hive Mind Therapy. Great photos! Absolutely amazing event! Families walked into the lobby to enjoy freshly baked cookies donated from Old Europe Pastries, endless free comfort kits (donated by Lutheran Disaster Response Carolinas and Hive Mind Therapy), and continued to walk through the lobby and into a gymnasium to see a room bustling with 36+ local businesses offering fun-filled activities for the kids. The energy was pure joy! Kids were getting their face painted, running around playing sports, coloring, singing, dancing with holla hoops -- endless fun! And there was a DJ! It was far beyond what I expected. Above all, families were happy. There was joy. We accomplished the purpose -- to bring joy and comfort to hundreds of families impacted by the Helene disaster. Families enjoyed a holiday meal catered by My Food Experience, and walked away with tons of FREE toys, Christmas presents, 3-4 comfort kits, and a handful of children's books to enjoy this holiday season. It was pure joy for everyone! Thank you to all the volunteers, the sponsors, the donors, the organizers, and all the families who came!!

How are we helping moms and dads? How are we helping families in disasters? See for yourself. :-) https://lnkd.in/g_7kmVNm Another video of an amazing family that trusted National Emergency Child Care Network to help them rebuild their lives after Hurricane Helene. Help us help more families -- spread the word, repost, share, comment. Kelsey’s house was completely destroyed in Hurricane Helene in Asheville, North Carolina. Her family rented an Airbnb to manage. Kelsey found National Emergency Child Care Network through a FB posting from another parent in Asheville and contacted us through our website form (https://lnkd.in/dwvqx-TF). All Kelsey had to do was fill out her contact details on our website form and the team reached out immediately to coordinate the deployment of child care volunteers to support her family. We provided Kelsey, a working mom of two boys, with 3 days of free child care. Kelsey needed support to recharge and get home repairs done from a tree that fell on their home. Kelsey shared, “It was great for Ryan and I to be able to tackle the house projects together and right now our house just isn’t safe for the kids to be there." Thank you Kelsey and Ryan for trusting us to help and support your family. We loved spending time with your kiddos! :-)

Wow! Talk about a major milestone accomplished! Last night I submitted our Action for Women's Health application which was NO joke. Big thanks Langley Ellmann who helped us with research, data points, and insights to pull together a strong application. And thanks to Lisa-Beth Harris for suggesting we apply. We have a shot at something amazing here and now it's up to Pivotal to see the scalability of our work and the critical need for emergency child care to help moms and families get the support they need when in crisis! Wish us luck!! On October 9, 2024, Pivotal, a Melinda French Gates organization, launched Action for Women’s Health, a $250 million global open call that will fund organizations around the world that are improving women’s mental and physical health. How does National Emergency Child Care Network fit into this? Studies have shown that difficulty arranging childcare and child care disruptions are associated with greater psychological distress and worse mental health among mothers. I can DEFINITELY validate this! What about you?? Mental health was ~10% lower and the prevalence of very good physical health was ~3% lower among female parents who had a childcare disruption compared with those who did not. Additional studies indicate that maternal mental health after a disaster is more influential on child development than the disaster itself. Disasters can cause trauma and severe stress, which can lead to postpartum depression, anxiety, and other mental health issues for women -- which we are seeing in Asheville NOW -- evidence indicates that mothers are more vulnerable than other women. Disasters can cause economic impacts that also affect women, such as disruptions in child care, job loss, housing insecurity, overall safety in the community, and access to basic human services. Disasters such as hurricanes, the focus is on immediate needs of the general population, such as access to food and shelter, and often times access to healthcare services for vulnerable populations, like pregnant or postpartum women, can be overlooked. Research shows that disasters increase the risk of miscarriage, premature delivery, and low birth weight. Evidence of Hurricane Katrina showed that maternal mental health problems such as post traumatic stress disorder, depression, or hostility were associated with difficult infant temperament, which results in increased stress and parental unhappiness. Has any mom reading this post experienced a disaster and seen their child's anxiety increase as a result of the disaster?? Disasters are incredibly stressful and scary for children! Sarah (https://lnkd.in/eyvWp8HU her video) was one employee at United Way who needed child care. NECCN provided 16 days of free child care over 3 weeks where 11 volunteers gave 110 hours of child care support to help 5 employees and 7 children. https://lnkd.in/gYZXv39C
