Last week, during a joint meeting between the Carnegie Corporation of New York and the National Education Equity Lab, Interim President Mike Kotlikoff represented Cornell on a panel of other leaders and discussed the importance of expanding educational opportunities beyond our campuses. The summit highlighted the importance of the National Education Equity Lab, of which Cornell is a member, and its mission to prepare low-income students to enroll and succeed in college.

Since 2020, Arizona State University’s partnership with the National Education Equity Lab has served over 12,300 high school students across the country. Flexible, innovative programs like Accelerate ASU prepare high school students for future success and learning. Students are able to access college-level courses designed and assessed by expert faculty at ASU. ?? We at Carnegie were delighted to host our grantee?National Education Equity Lab, which provides college-level courses to students in underperforming high schools. It was my pleasure to moderate a panel of university presidents who participate in the program:?Laura Rosenbury?of?Barnard College, Christina H. Paxson of?Brown University, Michael I. Kotlikoff of?Cornell University,?Michael Roth?of?Wesleyan University?(where 3,000 Lab students have taken online courses), and?Ben Vinson III?of?Howard University, who offered memorable words of encouragement for ambitious high school students:??“You are ready—so ready—for what’s next.” The highlight of the evening was a panel of students moderated by our trustee?Hon. Ann Claire Williams (Ret.). Their confidence, ambition and energy was an inspiration to us all.

Yesterday, we had the amazing opportunity to be hosted by Carnegie Corporation of New York for a night of recognizing our incredible consortium of colleges and universities. We celebrated their leadership in propelling the American Dream by advancing opportunity beyond their gates. We were honored to hear directly from university presidents about why they are committed to expanding access to higher education. Carnegie President Dame Louise Richardson moderated an insightful panel with Wesleyan University President Michael Roth, Brown University President Christina Paxson, Cornell University President Michael Kotlikoff, Howard University President Ben Vinson, III, and Barnard College President Laura Rosenbury. We also recognized the incredible leaders at our partner institutions that are offering college credit-bearing courses in historically underserved high school classrooms across the nation, at no cost to students. Arizona State University President Michael Crow, Georgetown University President John DeGioia, Morehouse College President David Thomas, Spelman College President Helen D. Gayle, Stanford University President Jon Levin and Vice Provost Matthew Rascoff, University of California Office of the President Michael Drake, University of Pennsylvania President J. Larry Jameson, Provost John L. Jackson Jr., and Wharton Global Youth Program Executive Director Eli Lesser. Our team had the opportunity to visit one of our partner schools H.D. Woodson High School in Washington, DC. A major shoutout to Principal Massey for his dedication to engaging the community and providing responsive solutions to expanding postsecondary access. College Advisor Lara Eldredge Schott has been an amazing leader in this partnership. Currently, HD Woodson has offered 5 college-credit bearing classes to scholars including Morehouse College's Social Problems this fall semester. We're so proud of our scholars!

Last week, we had the honor of hosting Ed Equity Lab's Educator and High School Award Ceremony! ?? There were so many moments of joyful tears from our educators and scholars. And here is just one we'd like to share out. A big congratulations to South Valley Academy in Albuquerque, New Mexico and KIPP New Jersey Newark Collegiate Academy for receiving our Scholar Impact Award. Collectively, these schools have empowered over 500 students to successfully pass an Ed Equity Lab course and earn free college credit. This remarkable achievement has opened invaluable doors for these students, creating lasting academic and financial benefits that will shape their futures. A special thank you to Kipp Newark Collegiate Academy Principal Sharmaine Lewis for her inspiring remarks. She reminded us all that, "these are not just educators, they are life-changers and luminaries." We can't wait to share more of our amazing awardees!
