National Economic Mobility Initiatives, Inc. - NEMICORP, a nonprofit social enterprise, facilitates the economic mobility of participants by providing education, training, certifications, psychosocial supports and living wage employment to people who earn less than 200% of poverty. We harness the power of the marketplace to fund our ability to make positive change in people's lives. We provide value and economic incentives to businesses, consumers, and funders to use our services, buy our products and to provide financial support to help create economic opportunity for low-wage workers across three verticals - Information Technology, Healthcare and Construction Trades. People can become economically mobile when presented with opportunities to earn a living wage in ways that assuage each person's desire to self-actualize - to build the life they envision for themselves and their family. Opportunity works best when it is accompanied by coaching, psychosocial supports, training, increasing levels of personal/professional empowerment and a sustainable strategy that enables people to perpetuate their success as they grow and learn. Career Success Coaches support our employees' individual efforts to thrive. NEMICORP exclusively recruits individuals who were earning less than 200% of poverty in the 12 months prior to applying for employment, or are currently receiving benefits from social safety-net programs, or are students/graduates of state or foundation recognized workforce development/poverty mitigation programs. Employees execute on services contracts with businesses, government, educational and nonprofit institutions as regular full-time employees of NEMICORP, earning a living wage and a full benefits package. Trainings and certifications are obtained via our "on-the-job-training" (OTJ) method ensuring employees have income and benefits while they train and secure certifications.

I spent the day with community leaders in the Poppleton neighborhood here in Baltimore, Maryland. 50.5% of the households in this neighborhood live below the federal poverty level. We discussed strategies for moving forward. Can we raise from these ashes a more vibrant, safe and thriving community? The leaders see it, but each murder, each assault, each eviction feels like a gut-punch. Yet, their vision is clear. As we parted for the evening, we revisited advice my father gave me when I was a boy. He said, “Son, do not doubt in the dark, what you have seen in the light.” Now, let’s roll…
