The National Conference of Vietnamese American Attorneys (NCVAA) held its inaugural installation ceremony on Friday, November 19, 2010 in Los Angeles, California. NCVAA is the first ever national Vietnamese American bar association. Judge Jacqueline My Le Duong, Superior Court of Santa Clara County, California, administered the oath of office to the organization’s first set of officers and directors. Judge Duong was the driving force in organizing the first annual conference before she was appointed to the bench and has been a great supporter all along. Judge Nho Trong Nguyen, Superior Court of Orange County, California, delivered a keynote address. About seventy attorneys and law students from around the United States attended the event. NCVAA arises out of over six years of network-building efforts by Vietnamese American attorneys nationwide, including ad hoc conferences that also went by the NCVAA name. The Vietnamese American Bar Association of Northern California hosted the first conference in San Jose, California in 2006. The second NCVAA conference was hosted by the Vietnamese American Bar Association of Southern California in 2007, in Orange County, California. Later conferences rotated among various locations including Washington, D.C. and Houston, Texas. “Given the enthusiasm of the conference attendees and the recognized need for a permanent national organization, we decided to turn NCVAA from an annual one-time thing to an incorporated bar association,” said Mai D. Phan, the organization’s first president. Phan has personally experienced the need for a national infrastructure. Now living in California but raised in Mississippi and Louisiana, she helped mobilize Vietnamese American attorneys nationwide to respond to crises in the Gulf states caused by Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and the BP oil spill in 2010.

Congratulations Thuan Tran! We look forward to celebrating with you in person in Washington DC May 2-4, 2025, if not sooner!
Thank you again Asian American Chamber of Commerce for giving me this award and considering me as part of this talented and driven group of individuals. Being able to meet and interact with so many bright and multifaceted young people last night brought me joy and hope that there are so many people out there who are not only making an impact in their industry, but also doing a lot for their community and DEI initiatives. It inspires me to seek out more ways to serve my community and continue helping others.

From the opening reception with NCVAA Trailblazer Thy Bui, the FIRST #Vietnamese #American President of NAPABA to our luncheon, presented in collaboration with VIETNAMESE AMERICAN BAR ASSOCIATION OF THE GREATER WASHINGTON that was more than double our expectations, to the closing gala of over 2000 attendees, this event was certainly needed and energizing! We are excited for our next conference in Washington DC, May 2-4, 2025 and we invite you all to mark your calendars now and look for a registration email and sponsorship opportunities soon! I just got honored with the Cornerstone Award by the National Conference of Vietnamese American Attorneys at their annual conference for helping advancing Vietnamese American professionals. The reception was held at the Seattle Art Museum. I went with my brother Don and my mom and we got to tour the exhibits, which was an extra special treat because it was his first time at the SAM and my mom's first time to an art museum ever in our 44 years in the US. When I went to college, I thought I was going to become a lawyer, a dream of my parents. So, I think getting this award helped soften their disappointment years later.
